Subject:Back ground noise?

I have noticed that I have alot of back ground noise in my
recordings. Im recording from CD, which I would think would
have a back ground noise level of at the most -85. But Im
getting -42, to me thats alot coming from a CD recording.
The CD I recorded is not a copy of a analog tape, but is
all digitally recorded. Could the noise be caused by my
sound card? Its an old ESS 1688. By far not a good card,
but it didnt matter before, as I was not doing any
recordings like this. Im thinking of going with the sound
blaster value card, I dont really need the full version
card, that would be over kill for me, plus I would save
about $100 going with the value card. I wonder if the MP3
version of that card would be a better card? Thanks for
your time, later. Ron.
