Subject:Metering inconsistency

I'm using SF 4.5 for restoration of taped audio. Problem: I
monitor the entire track before recording, setting a good
full scale level with no clipping. But as soon as I record
the same audio, without changing a thing, I get higher
levels with all kinds of overs. Is this due to SF or my
soundcard? Soundcard is an Aureal 3D (based on Ensoniq PCI,
I believe)consumer-grade full-duplex stereo card.
