Subject:9.0e Does Not Install For Me

When I attempt to install the 9.0e patch, I receive the following error:

Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sony Corporation\OpenMG\PC\{26EB1712-F516-4DDF-AC63-1F6B1B422C84}\901. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

I am an administrator on this machine. This is Windows XP Professional.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this? I receive this same message when attempting to uninstall Sound Forge. It ends up making Sound Forge unregistered in both cases of trying to install this patch.

I would suggest that if you have attempted an uninstall, then you need to resinstall and usthorise your orginal copy of 9 before you will be able to do the update.

Well, there is no such thing as a 9.0e patch. 9.0e is the full installation package so it doesn't matter if a previous release is installed or not.

Sounds to me like that registry entry got hosed. You could try deleting that key/value pair manually in regedit. Then try doing the install again.

Deleting the entire key did the trick. Thanks.

For reasons unknown to me, the software sets permissions on the key so that no one can read it (including administrators). Right-clicking the key followed by Permissions on the menu allowed me to add myself with full control over the key. I was able to delete the entire key then.

This is really poor, btw. I am beginning to get discouraged with some of these releases.

The poorly desgined install will not reinstall if it finds that it is already installed. Very poor implementation, if you ask me.

In addition, it deactivates the existing copy of Sound Forge after the uninstall fails. It doesn't remove any files, but it simply removes your activation key. Why in the world someone coded such a 'feature' is beyond me.

Well, deleting the entire key seems to have made matters much worse. I was able to successfully install the software, but it is no longer activated. Now it will not accept my activation key.

I emailed support yesterday, but it takes days (weeks) for them to respond.

I finally got 9.0e working in a very convoluted way. The 9.0e package has a few bugs and does not set itself up for execution correctly, it seems. Fortunately, I have various versions of the Sound Forge install package, since version 6.0, on my hard drive. I uninstalled 9.0e, performed a clean install of Sound Forge 8.0d and CD Architect. I successfully activated both of those, after which I uninstalled Sound Forge 8.0. I primarily installed 8.0 to ensure I could activate and use the software with my previous key.

Next, I installed Sound Forge 9.0a and successfully activated it with my key. After this, I ran the install for 9.0e that updated my 9.0a install. One of the bugs with 9.0e is that it forces you to activate after installing this version. Even though 9.0a was activated, it lost all my contact info and my activation key. No previous versions of Sound Forge did this that I am aware of.

Fortunately, 9.0e did activate successfully this time.

9e doesn't force you to re-activate as such, but part of the bug with demo mode seems to be interconnected, so I would guess that to fix the problem, a few changes had to be made, which will affect some of us in different ways - depending on previous installations etc.

Most importantly - 9e seems to be almost all positive news, which is a good sign

I replied (I wish this forum had a quote feature):
This kind of thing is what I was referring to in a previous post of mine in another thread. Wanted to know what possible 'gotchas' there might be in the 9.0e version. I'd downloaded the 9.0e but haven't installed it yet. I have a functioning 9.0c that works quite well for me and can't afford to muck about with a possibly problematic update. I've never uninstalled a previous version when installing an update. Any thoughts if this would be prudent to do now? I usually install the new version wherever the installer wants to install it.

Is it possible that you were attempting to install the trial version of 9.0e on top of your existing installation?

No. This was not the case.

I probably should not have deleted the registry key though. It turned out that none of my Sony products I had installed were activated after doing all of this (Vegas, DVD Architect and CD Architect). I am not sure if this was caused by my deleting the registry key or the bug with the 9.0e install.

Well, this is definitely a problem. I see at least one other post in this forum that mentions this same issue. I have reproduced it, and without having access to the 9.0a install, I would not be able to fully utilize 9.0e.

Sorry - but that last bit is nonsense. 9e is a full install, it's not simply an update par-se. Therefore, installing 9e clean, or using it as an update does not lose any features over a 9a.

Deleting registry keys will FUBAR many programs, and the Sony apps are no exception. However, all is not lost, possibly...

If you're lucky, a simply re-register will sort you out, and that's where Sony are quite cool with allowing many re-registrations. (unlike some other companies, that literally tie you to one or 2 installs and that's it, without all sorts of de-activation and so forth...)
Otherwise, it will take a re-install of the other apps as well.

What can't you utilise in 9e now?

The only nonsense I see at all in this thread was me spending 40 minutes of trial and error trying to get my licensed download of 9.0e to work on my computer.

Re-reading the issue here (which I thought was pretty clear) might help Sony resolve this issue in the next patch. I am a long-time user of Sonic Foundry's products, and I have never encountered anything like this.

Jamil:
You might have a problem other than what you are thinking.
1) You might have a corrupt download
2) You might have a virus
3) Have you turned off any virus protection software?
4) If you have SP2 of WinXp installed, that has been known to break a few programs.
5) Your registry might be corrupted.

Try going back a few generations in Windows Restore and re-install SF9.0e. As Kenny has said, you don't need to have 9.0a installed to install 9.0e. I know sometimes Windows Restore doesn't work as it's supposed to; that's why I use Norton Ghost to back-up my internal hard drive. All data is on a separate drive.

Jack, I will not be doing any of this because (I believe many people have missed this even though I did post it) 9.0e is installed and working fine now.

The problem was that I could not install 9.0e at all while 9.0c was installed. I got the same registry error that was posted in this forum by someone else. I could not uninstall 9.0c. Period. Chienworks was the only one who suggested something that actually helped me move forward (I have not even received anything from support on this issue). Yes -- I have SP2 of WinXP installed. If Sony's software does not function with the latest service pack of Microsoft Windows, I am certainly not calling Microsoft to ask them to fix Sound Forge (when every other piece of software I have installed functions fine). No -- I do not have a virus.

I know that everyone likes Sound Forge, but the software has issues. I am seeing a decline in the quality of releases, and I am a long-time user of the product.

Jamil -

Having the same problem and am glad for your posts. I also had found the suggestion to delete the registry key but have not done it yet - thanks for stopping me by describing your experience.

I still cannot get 9.0e to install. It says that I need local system administrator privileges (I do with my user), so I log in as the admin, and then it says the system admin has set policies to prevent this install. I cannot find any such policies.

Where are these purported policies?

Sorry for the late reply, and I hope you've resolved this issue by now. I stopped logging into to this forum for awhile due to people disbelieving that the latest version of Sound Forge could possibly have bugs and that I'm an idiot. ;-)

You can delete the registry key mentioned as long as you still have your license keys to reactivate all products. If you've registered your products, you can get your keys quickly and easily on the site here. The tricky part is enabling access to actually delete the keys. You have to do this by right clicking the registry node (folder) in the registry editor followed by clicking Permissions in the context menu that appears.

This permission setting of the registry key could be part of the problem with the installation.
