Subject:Overall Sound input levels

I am digitizing vinyl audio. The signal goes from a turntable to a mixer to my stereo receiver to my soundcard. My receiver does not have a recording level control. I keep getting very quiet audio files. I have tried bumping up the volume using the Process>volume control but keep getting a ton of clipping. Questions: 1 - How loud should the input be? How can I tell? 2 - Should I be boosting the volume in Soundforge? If so, how? Thanks, dave |

>>1 - How loud should the input be? How can I tell? Check the Monitor box in the Sound Forge record window to make the meters active. The level should be set so it is as high as possible in loud passages without making the Clip indicator light up. >>2 - Should I be boosting the volume in Soundforge? If so, >>how? Sound Forge has no way to control the input level of sound cards. That is done through the mixer for the sound card. The controls for most cards are available by double-clicking on the speaker icon on the Windows Task Bar (lower right on the screen). Go into Options|Properties, select Recording and press OK. The window will now show Recording Controls. Make sure that the Line Input is active (Select checked or Mute unchecked) and turned up. You might wish to leave this window open to adjust your CD volume once you are recording. Tom Hamer Sonic Foundry Tech Support |
