Subject:Record meter/input just stops

Okay, here I am with this great DAT that I want to put on a CD. I go to a friends house, we plug in the DAT, check the monitor box and let fly with some serious input. A few minutes down the road we find ourselves looking for sharp objects to bang our heads against. Once again, the line in is still functioning, but the meters are frozen and the time meter is still flying by. End result - less than half the file is recorded. This happens in ACID, too. We're working on a pentium III-550, with nearly 13 gigs on the drive, and 256 megs of ram. This has been brought up two or three other times on this discussion board and no one has posted help. Any ideas? |

Hi Scott, Sounds like a resource conflict. If you're using Win9x, try going into Control Panel;System, then click on second tab from left. Make sure there are no yellow or red flags displayed by your hardware items. If your sound card is an older ISA one, there can still be a hidden problem, reserving an IRQ for it takes more effort, but can be done. PCI ones should P-n-P without much fiddling. For example Digital Audio Labs older CardD+ has jumper settings for IRQ, which must be reserved in the System window. Pls advise your OS and sound card, I may be able to help, maybe not. A network card on the system can cause problems too. It grabs system resources and results in a stuttering recording on my PII 450. It would be a good idea to disable the other cards in the system such as a modem or scsi card while trying to record. |

Rick- I'm running on a Soundblaster live! audio card. I went into the system properties and there were no flags. (Not sure what they'd look like, but nothing seemed abnormal) Get this: about five tries into it today I crashed and then all of a sudden it worked. Well, lucky me decides to do some fancy editing and end up screwing up the original file. Time to re-record. Try two times unsuccessfully, and then I set it and go to work. Guess what? It records perfectly. It seems volatile for some reason. Any suggestions? |

I would try disabling other cards that might be causing a problem. Also, can you record with the Windows recorder? It only records to memory, but it would be a good way to double check. |

I'm kind of guessing here, but if it doesn't seem to be hardware related, there may be some process that periodically starts up, uses up cpu time, and interrupts the recording enough to kill it. Do you have MS Office on this machine ? By default it installs something call FindFast that periodically wakes up, and makes sure it knows where your documents are. If you have it, it will be in the control panel, Start;Settings;Control then highlight FindFast, and there are ways to stop it. I've also seen recommendations to kill the Scheduler, on Digital Audio editing machines. I've heard many times of Video Cards/Drivers being blamed for audio recording foul-ups, too. Wouldn't hurt to check your Video Card mfr's Web page to get latest driver. I have Matrox on one machine and ATITech on another, and both of these companies periodically release new drivers. Scott, Here are a few suggestions: Get rid of any background tasks that may be running on your system. Something may be taking the SB driver out while you record. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and use the Close Program window to End Task on everything except Explorer and Systray. If this helps, a little trial and error testing may reveal what was causing the lock-up while recording. Set Screen Savers under Control Panel, Display to none. Update the driver for the SB Live card, especially if you are in NT. http://support.soundblaster.com/files/download.asp is the site. Many video card drivers are pretty unfriendly on the PCI bus. Try making the video driver use less resources by going into Control Panel, System, Performance, select Graphics and turn down the setting for Hardware Acceleration for the first notch (Basic Accelerator functions).
