Subject:Noise in Sound Forge 4.5 Posted by: rcaudle Date:8/23/1999 4:05:00 PM We are using SoundForge to record audio for our website. While recording we are getting a hiss in the background. We have tried to move the computer away from the power supplies but still have it (not a 60Hz Hum). We have adjusted all of the settings in Sound Forge and cannot get rid of it. The only way that we have found to get rid of it is to adjust the level of the line in signal to the audio card. When I do this I cannot hear the sound anymore. Any help is greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you are sending a low level signal into your souncard. ( What kind of gear r u using to play the source into the sound card? what kind of sound card do you have? ) If you are sending a 'mic' or consumer audio (not the same thing but both low level) level signal to an input that requires a line level signal you will have to crank the sound card to get anything out of it... problem with that is that most (all ) consumer sound devices have very noisy amplifiers (not to mention the noise INSIDE your machine) this is where your noise comes from. Even a high end card can have a surprisingly high noise floor. Try recording with nothing plugged in to the sound card and see if the hiss is there. The signal strength of the hiss will be your noise floor. Unfortunately, the only reasonable way to get around that is to upgrade the sound card to preferably something that has external DACs.
