We use S.F 4.0 and will be upgrading to 4.5 plus probably Vegas Pro but we need SPEED in processing files. Currently things take way way too long to do - say normalising or even just edit between tracks. We currently use a Pentium 200 with 128Mb RAM, 9Gb IDE harddrive. I intend to upgrade our audio system to Pentium III 600Mhz, at least 256Mb RAM and SCSI (Ultra wide) drives. Can I expect a decent increase in speed? If we up the RAM to say around 1Gb will this help us? In other words does S.F use all the RAM first and then go to virtual memory - for processing? If we went dual processor, can S.F take advantage of this? If we went for a SCSI raid array, would that help us gain more speed? This waiting up to an hour for some small change has always driven us crazy so any ideas/hints? Russell |

I'm wondering the same thing. I almost hate making edit to large track, because it takes a while for the changes to be saved. I have upgraded from a 120Mhz Pentium 8.5 Gig HardDrive IDE 64 Megs of Ram TO 350Mhz Pentium II 8.5 Gig and a 7.5 Gig IDE HD ( I try to use the 7.5 for music only) "Defraging takes less time" 128megs of Ram Alot faster, but when addin FX...man does it seen to take forever for the FX to be added and then you still have to save the file. I'm thought about maxin out the ram and making a ram drive to see if that would help, but I don't know if you can make ram drives using Win98. I just built this PC and I sure don't feel like building another. i'm another with the same problem. Currently running: Cel400A 128MB IBM 8.4GB IDE HDD (using several 2GB FAT16 partitions under Win98) 30-45 minute files just take too long to get done, even when using "Direct Mode." My understanding is that SForge performs operations directly on HDD to reduce data loss should the computer crash mid-operation. Now then, does the HDD system become the bottleneck? If so, will going to SCSI help this? Maybe upgrading to an adaptec 2940U2W w/ a fast Wide A/V HDD? Anybody seen a difference in speed?
