Is there a way to edit wav files for SOUND FORGE 4.0 so
that the vocals are gone?

You can adjust the channels so that everything panned to the center is
eliminated (which is where the majority of the lead vocals are). This
won't eliminate any panned vocals (like background vocals usually are)
or FX returns (which are normally off to the sides). Anyone remember the
Thompson Vocal Eliminator (look in the classifieds of your old Circus
magazines)? This is how that box worked in principle as well.

This will result in a sort-of-vocalless track, but it alters everything
else as well and usually ends up sounding very hollow. So, in short, you
can reduce the amount of vocals in the track through trickery. The only
method to completely eliminate them from the mix, of course, is to remix
the song and turn off the vocal track(s), and obviously you would need
access to the original multitrack for that.
