Subject:ess maestro sound card spits and pops...

it sounds just like a 'slow media' or 'cpu slicing'
problem. in the old days trying run soundforge on a slow
cpu (under 120mhz) i had to eliminate any 'extra programs'
running under windows otherwise i'd get little clicks and
pops trying to record at 44.1mhz. so i went out and got me
a DELL 7000 INSPIRON screamer: 300MHZ notebook with 64mb of
ram, a 6.4gb drive and when i run MICROSOFT SOUNDRECORDER
32 @ 44.1 stereo there's no audio problem! clean as a
whistle. but if i try to use SOUND FORGE 4.5 recording at
44.1mhz i get crackles. nothing to do with level. only
time i DON'T get crackles is when there is NOTHING plugged
into the ESS/MAESTRO input.

i have done EVERYTHING that was suggested so far:

1) removed ALL additional programs running. even have gone
into the bios and made sure that nothing is stealing away
cycles there.
2) defragged the drive.
3) reloaded the ESS MAESTRO drivers (at least 2x)
4) hounded DELL but of course since the MSSOUNDREX runs
fine, they point me back to SONIC FOUNDRY.

what's goin on guys?! anybody else have this problem?

We have a Micron Laptop Transport Trek 2 Pentium II, 128 MB RAM, 8
Gig drive running Windows 98 with the Maestro sound card and I also
get pops when I record with Sound Forge XP 4.5. When I record with
the Windows Sound Recorder app it sounds fine. When I record while
running MS PowerPoint it also works fine. We also have defragged the
drive and reinstalled the Maestro drivers. I am recording at 22,050
Hz 16 bit mono.
Does anyone else have this problem? and does anyone know of a fix?
