Subject:Remastering 78s with Sound Forge

As a hobby, I remaster 78 RPM records, and I use Sound Forge
for editing and noise reduction. Are there others in this forum who
do this type of work?

Remastering 78s presents problems that don't usually arise with LPs.
For example, most 78s have a lot of hiss and many pops and ticks.
Also, groove wear on 78s can produce types of distortion not usually
present on LPs.

I find that I use the smoothing feature a lot, especially for a common
type of record wear in which the peaks and troughs of the waveform are
jagged. If I smooth the peaks and troughs, but leave the rest of the
wave alone, it will reduce distortion without sacrificing highs (there are
high frequencies on some 78s, despite what you might think). This is
very time-consuming, and it would be nice if Sound Forge had a feature
to smooth the tops and bottoms of the waves.
