Subject:CD Quality MP3 Export in SF XP 4.5

How do you do it? I want to convert my Acid mixes into MP3 from SF but the highest quality available is only
56K. That's a far cry from the standard 128K.

Why is there this limitation and is there any way around it?

The MPEG Layer 3 convert you are using does not allow for better quality.
Sound Forge does not ship with the codec. The codec you are using probably
came with IE4 or some other audio tool you installed.

If you check in Multimedia properties for the Audio Compression Codecs, the
one you are using is Fraunhofer. You will need to license the "pro" quality
codec from Fraunhofer or another supplier.

Thanks....this sux. I guess I'll register Music Match Jukebox and use it's WAV to MP3 converters. Also, since
the RealAudio converter in SF isn't as good as the free standing encoder, I guess I'll have to use that too.

Too bad that SF advertises itself as an all-formats tool when it truly isn't.

I am sorry you are dissatisfied. We can only support what is on your system.

What is "not as good" about our RA converter?

For some reason or other, when I save in real audio format for stereo 20kbps bitrate,
I get dropouts consistently in the same places when I play the file FROM THE HARD DRIVE!
I have the latest version of RealAudio (downloaded yesterday july 8th) and when the first dropout
happens, the player reports that it is NET CONGESTION..

What the heck is this all about?

The source data was a 44.1khz 16 bit stereo wav file..

The hard drive was defragged, and a 7500 rpm maxtor, on a pentium III 450 with 128 mb of ram,
All unecessary background apps were disabled.

This behavior exhibited itself on two separate machines

One, a compaq pentium II 450 with 128 mb of ram (brand new build) and windows NT
the other is the aforementioned pentium III

I used the same realplayer on both systems, the same build of SF and some of the same, some different source material.

I tried resampling with anti-aliasing down to 8khz freq response, but the problems still happen..

What is up with this? My build of SF is SoundForge 4.5a

The problem happens with batch processing, as well as with saving from SF proper. I believe the highest bitrates
worked ok, and I think 16kbps mono voice did as well, but that is not acceptable...

Hey - Chris,

The 'net congestion' error on the real player has alot more to do with
how the player is reading and processing data than with net
congestion. When the player's buffer has run out, looks for data,
does not find any, it will display the net congestion error... even
though you're playing back locally.

I just encoded a 45 min file at 20kbps stereo and had no problems.
(thought you might be interested in a control group)Playing back - and
while I admit that SF encoded 'real' files sound different than ones
done on the stand alone encoder - they don't sound any worse.

oh BTW - there's no such thing as a CD quality MP3 encode... 44.1k X
(16*8)... you do the math. If the file size is smaller there's stuff
missing :)
