Subject:Keep losing SF after defraging HD

I've had this happen 3 times now, twice with Diskeeper and now with Nuts and Bolts 98.
It happens when I do a complete reorder of the hard drive for speed purposes, after which
SF (4.0 & 4.5) reports that it is not setup correctly and that I'll have to re-install.
I've never noticed this with any other software, so why with SF ? Are there any quick remedies ?
Somebody from Sonic Foundry please comment, as this is getting frustrating.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Interesting.....I had the same problem when I tried to
install a new (master) hard drive in one of my PCs. I
installed the new drive as a slave and then used a disk-
image copier to copy the *entire* contents of my original
master to the new one. I then swapped them around and
rebooted. Everything worked except SF and (strangely) Cool
Edit Pro. They both gave me the message that you described.
I mailed support but got a lame reply about SF and registry
keys but as far as I know SF (along with all my other
software) should have been recreated byte-for-byte. Our
systems administrator says he's NEVER had this problem with
any other software.....

I too would appreciate an explanation.....

I believe this to be part of their copy protection scheme making it so you
just can't copy the program from drive to drive. Any time you make a change
to a drive (resizing, etc.) SF needs a new install. This tends to be a real
pain especially to people like me who are always upgrading and tweaking
their systems. Worse is that it wipes out all of your presets that you've
saved. This is really bad programming. Defragging with Norton Speedisk or
Microsoft's one does not wipe out SF or Acid.

I really dislike invasive (hardware dependant) copy protection for this and
many other reasons.
