Subject:DIGITAL FILE TRANSFER INTO SOUND FORGE

I'm wondering if Sound Forge is capable of accepting digital files from an external DAT player
through a soundcard with digital I/O? I have the sound coming into the computer fine - Sound Forge
just can't detect anything. What I want to do is clone the digital file on DAT onto my computer's hard
drive. What's the best way to do this with Sound Forge?

What sound card are you using?

Make sure that you have the sound card selected as the record device in your
options.

Hmm. Where'd my reply go?

I basically said that I use a portable DAT recorder and an ADb MultiWAV card to do just what you
want to do.

Make sure you can see the card in the Control Panel's Multimedia section, and that it's set as
the recording device.

If it's a Digital Audio Labs card, who knows? I had three of those crappy cards and eventually
had to just get a refund and go with the MultiWAV. Haven't had any problems.

Good luck.

Also, if it is one of the consumer end cards with Digi I/O
you must make sure the windows mixer settings select the spdif input
as the recording source. Go into the windows mixer, or double click
the speaker icon in your systray. Under your first drop down menu
select properties. Then check the recording button. heck the boxes
next to all of your sources in the scrolling window, then hit okay.
Now your mixer shows you your input sources. Make sure spdif or
digital I/O in is checked as your recording source and that your fader
level is high enough. If you click on the checkbox next to monitor, in
the recording window of SF, you should see your levels coming in.

In addition to the other replys, I should add that when I was tasked
to edit a clarinet quartet recorded on a consumer DAT, my
SoundBlaster Live (with digital S/PDIF) would not let me record the
file to hard disk. It suggested that I was a crook trying to steal
copywrited material. Of course you also can't copy CD tracks to your
hard drive in Sound Forge since it automatically mutes those
copywrited files. I'm "playing in" files using OPCODE SonicPort on
my laptop with no problems.
