Subject:Audio Properties under WIN98

if you right click on the sound icon in the systray you
access "Audio Properties."

Under "Recording"- "Advanced Properties" it talks about
Sample Rate Conversion Quality. the slider goes from
Good to Best.

my question is: How exactly does this relate to being in SF
and setting the sample rate to 44kHz - as an example??

..do i have to worry 'bout this setting??

..i'm using an SB-AWE64 and i can't seem to set it
to best

go into your control pannel. Select multimedia. Go to the advanced page and
select your sample rate.

Also, call your local music store and ask about a Darla, Gina or Layla card. These are
multiple input / output interfaces that work wonders. Good luck.

Go to: http://www.event1.com

There you could read on all of the cards. They are great... All have 8
analog outputs.
Then the gina combines 8 anolog outputs, Digital IN/OUT and a breakout
box...
The layla has 8/8 analog I/O and SPDIF In/Out all mounted in a 1 space
rack box...

They are great cards... I use the Gina with drivers v4.0.3 and no
problems...

Hi bob,

You do not need to worry about this slider and in most instances of Win98, it doesn't actually
work (leave it to microsoft to make something that doesn't work!).

What this is slider is supposed to do is change the "default" recording quality in Windows from
Radio, telephone, and CD Quality. That way any program that chooses to use the "default"
instead of letting the user specify just uses whatever you set on this slider. For example, Sound
Recorder is a good example of a program that does this. It uses the Windows default recording
quality. Unfortunately, the slider doesn't update the registry entry pertaining to the default
recording quality in Win98 (in regedit --
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Audio; Name:DefaultFormat; Value: "Radio
Quality" and HKEY_USERs\Default\Microsoft\Multimedia\Audio; Name:DefaultFormat; Value:
"Radio Quality").

How does this affect SF4.5??? It doesn't. This has no bearing what-so-ever on Sound Forge
because SF doesn't use the Windows default recording quality. every time you choose new from
the File menu in SF it asks you for the Sampling Rate, Mono/Stereo, etc... Because of this, the
slider would not affect the performance of SF at all (even if the slider did work!).

So to answer your question in a word..."No", you don't have to worry about the slider at all. And
the reason why you can't get it to work with best quality using your ASWE64 is because the slider
usually doesn't work in Win98. But if you set the sampling rate in Sound Forge to 44KHz, they
you are essentially doing the same thing as what the slider would do anyway.

Am I making sense or am I just rambling???

Anyway, I hope this helped clear it up for you.

Yes, I have to agree, buy a "Real" Sound card if your intentions are
to do professional quality audio. I own 2 Gina Cards and they work
great together. I don't know about the Awe64 but it's noted in My
Gina Card driver release, that the quality sample quality slider has
no effect and that this is sound card and driver dependant. So the
reason why you can't get the slider to goto Best quality is because
your Soundblaster card does not support it. This has nothing to do
with Sound Forge it has more to do with DtoA conversions and buffers
on your soundcard.
