I have an 80 min file with about 1,000 samples on it.

I’ve been putting markers before each sample, putting a title on it and then cutting & pasting each sample to its own new file.

This is time consuming.

Is there a quick and easier way of doing this?

Thanks in advance.

After you've got your markers in place, go to Special / Markers to Regions. This converts the orange markers to green region flags. The difference is that while markers specify where something starts, regions are both a start and an end.

Now go to Tools / Extract regions. This will automatically save each region as it's own separate .wav file.

Are there gaps between the samples? If so - then yes, you can get it to automatically detect regions

Thanks for your replies,

Yes, there are gaps between samples.

From what you said, it looks like I can automatically detect regions without manually putting in markers :-)

How can I have Sound Forge automatically insert these regions?
Will SF insert a region on the start of the sound, in between two sounds, or….?

Tools - autoregion. Try "speech phrases" as a default, or music. If too many regions appear, LOWER the attack/release sensitiviy, if not enough, increase it.

After that, simply extract regions (again under tools). For the most part, you should find a good result without having to insert a single marker yourself, nor manually cut/extract a region yourself!

I couldn't get it to work right with "Auto Region". The samples have about 3 seconds space between them but some of them have about 1 second or so space between certain words.

Auto Region, puts Regions all over the place. I couldn't adjust it to the way I wanted (I may need to tweak the setting some more).

I not very familiar with Regions (never used them before), but it looks like I have to put in a marker then another marker right over it and then convert them to regions.

I do like "Extract Region" but, Is there a way to have it save the files as separate mp3 files instead of wav?

You shouldn't need to double up markers. The Markers to Regions function creates a region between each marker and the next. If you have two markers right on top of each other then you'll get an additional region of zero length.

And sorry, no, extract regions only creates WAV files. Of course you could batch convert afterwards.

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with Batch Convert.

How can I do this?

Tools->Batch Converter. See the help file for more details (Scripting->The Batch Converter Script).

I've also noticed that there are only numbers on the first 99 markers.
I don't think that it's a big deal.

It's a known aspect - you can utilise a script on this forum (search for it) to convert them into "outside caret" numbers, and then add the prefix in the labels, and then you can keep numbering into many thousands
