Subject:SF Audio Studio 9 Not Recording

I just got the software and installed the latest update. I plug in my Logitech headset mic and try to record, but get nothing. It seems to not recognize the mic. I have spent hours going over and over the tutorial, the Help manual, the Sony website, etc., but cannot figure this out.

I know the mic works because I have a free version of Audacity, and it works just fine. I simply open up the program, plug in the mic, hit record, and start talking. It records no problem. SF doesn't do squat.

I admit I'm not the most technically sophisticated person, but I heard this was supposed to be easy. This program came highly recommended to me, but I'm on the verge of returning it. Anyone have any ideas?

Sound Forge will record whatever is currently selected as the record input for your sound card. It doesn't have any way to alter that selection itself.

Open up the volume control panel for your sound card, usually done by double-clicking the speaker icon in the task bar. Click Options / Properties / Recording. In that panel select the mic input and make sure the volume is turned up.

Depending on your setup, once the mic is plugged in, open SForge, go to record, and click on the "blue '1' ". You will see a list of currently activated inputs that you can select from - maybe your mic will appear in there.

Chienworks,

Thanks for your reply. I have followed those steps over and over again. My mic shows up, I select it, select Recording, and make sure the volume is up and it is not muted. It does not work. I just went back and did it again just to make sure, and there's still nothing.

Kenny,

When I click on the blue 1, my only options are Microsoft Sound Mapper, Microsoft Soundmapper- Left, and Microsoft Soundmapper- Right. My mic does not appear, even though I've selected for my sound card. Should it be there? How do I add it?

Thanks.

I figured it out!

Unfortunately, the instructions given with the program do not work for me. Hence, my frustration.

What I had to do was go to Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, and choose my headset mic as the default device for recording both audio and voice. I'm not sure why changing it at the time of the recording, which is what the manual says to do, does not work on my computer, but it doesn't. Once I selected my mic as the default device, it worked like a charm, without having to do anything extra when I want to record.

BTW, I have a Toshiba 5500T laptop.

Actually, I think it's an operating system issue on the computer...I've discovered the same problem using SF9 with a USB analog to digital converter for my 24 channel live mixing console...I feed the main mix out the CD/Tape outputs of the mixer to the USB converter, then into SF9 to record live tracks...The OS sometimes does not switch between the internal, normal sound card and the USB input/output.

What I've discovered as a quick way to check it, is to have a file playing in Windows Media Player when I plug in the USB converter...If the sound quits playing on the internal speakers of the laptop (Sony FX4), then it probably switched correctly...Going into control panel/sound devices to check it, and manually switch it if it doesn't.

SF9 actually works very well for live recording...
