Subject:Generating Sci Fi sounds

I've just recently tried the Synthesis tool in Sound Forge 8. It seems like a tool to create all those cool Sci-Fi sounds used in movies like Forbidden Planet or The Day the Earth Stood Still. I don't mean just the Theramin sounds, but all the synthesized sounds!

I'm wondering if anybody has documented how to re-create some of the most common sounds used in Sci-Fi movies, especially the sounds from those 1950's classics.

I'm kind of too lazy to do all that experimenting myself. And I also don't really want to get another software program or a sound library.

I think it would be a great continuing thread or maybe a subject for a Sony newsletter.

How about it people? Any takers? Any givers?

The FM synthesiser is great for what you want.

But I would urge you to not be lazy (as you put it) and really experiment. It's a much better way of finding out how the carrier and modulator interact and the results can be suprising and rewarding.

The help file will enable you to work out how to interact with the controls for changing between 1 and 4 waves and also how to chain them into an order that is effective.

Aside from the synth parts, the delay effect will also complement the sounds really well.

What also works wells if you have a good set of sound samples is to use the Time Stretch plug-in to either stretch or compress a wav file. I tried experimenting with a cricket sample I have and got some sounds really reminiscent of the old sci-fi flicks. There are some sounds out there on the net, but ones you construct on your own will be much better - they won't be sampled with a mic set next to a speaker or from trying to record TV audio via a TV audio out.
