Some loops may have the same note progression and the same
root note, but the pitch is different.
I can change the pitch of events, but how do I know if
they're still in the same key?

not sure exactly what you mean.

each time you alter the pitch (+ or -) it is going up or
down a 1/2 step. so, find the pattern of steps for the key
you're in (WWWHWWH for major) and use that to see if you're
in the right key.
