Subject:Please help with getting my wav files on my site!

Hi! I just put up a new web site called "Song Demo
Services" a few weeks ago. I use Web Studio as my web
designing program, and I use Acid for my music loop
creations.

How do I get my wav files to load faster when
viewers "click" on my sound demonstrations? A 30-second, 4-
piece demo I created takes 5-10 minutes to load!! Will it
help any to cut it down to 5-10 seconds and use a
continuous loop? Or is it better to use less instruments to
get a faster load time? Which one reduces loading time
more: reducing the number of tracks for the demo, or
cutting the demo time down?

Lately, I installed Crescendo as a way for people to have
a "player box" to press start, pause, or stop. This comes
up every time anyone visits my page with the wav
demos: "you don't have Active X installed; would you like
to now?" Then you click on yes and the message box
disappears right away. But it never seems to stay installed
when you click "yes": it asks to install every time to re-
visit the page!

Would streaming my wav files help load them faster when a
visitor goes to the sound demo page and clicks on the icon
to hear the sounds? How do you do this, and what company
offers free streaming capabilities?

Thank you so much for all your time!

Hi Mike,

Wave files are extremely slow to download because they are much larger
files than those used in streaming formats, such as RealAudio, and
also compressed formats such as MP3. Reducing the length of the wave
and looping it will help, but will still be very slow. Reducing the
number of tracks/instruments in a project will have no effect at all
on the size of the final mixed down wave file. Changing from a stereo
to mono file will reduce the file size by just under 50%.

Streaming is absolutely the way to go if you want people to listen to
your sounds quickly and conveniently on the web. For an overview, I'd
say to start at RealAudio's site
(http://www.realnetworks.com/devzone/getting_started/gettingstarted.ht
ml).
All of the web hosting companies I know of charge more for plans that
include streaming, since streaming audio is a big bandwidth hog.
