Subject:ACID compatability with Digidesign DIGI 001?

A sales guy told me there might be compatability problems using ACID with Digi 001 for Windows. Something about Digidesign's proprietary properties. (He lost me in his techno-babble.) He mentioned that other native Windows audio programs are XG compatible. Was he talking about importing .wav files from ACID into ProTools LE? Pro Tools LE's possible inability to recognize ACID plug-ins? Or maybe the PCI card and I/O configuration wouldn't be able to recognize ACID. Or maybe he didn't know what he was talking about. Any insight into this would be helpful. Thanks! |

Not sure what he meant? Who did you talk to, a Sonic Foundry person? I don't believe that the 001 has wave device drivers. This would be one limitation. XG compatible: Hmmm. XG compatible to me means the Yamaha synth/voice architecture for many of this synths and voice technologies. This has nothing to do with ACID - or the 001 as far as I know. ACID uses DirectMedia (DirectX) plugins. I don't know whether the 001 supports these types of plugins. Let me do some research... >>I don't believe that the 001 has wave device drivers. This would be >>one limitation. >> Update: Yes, the 001 has wave drivers. All of our products can talk to it. There is no support for the Direct I/0 interface that DIGI provides so any special features of the hardware cannot be exposed in our applications. There is no plans to support the 001 hardware directly. Thanks Peter |

One clarification question: when you say that "any special features of the hardware cannot be exposed in our applications," what exactly do you mean? Do you mean that I can't record .wav files into Sound Forge or ACID using that I/O configuration? If that's the case, then I suppose I'll have to have another sound card compatible with SF products in order to do that. I know that your time is valuable and I appreciate your help in figuring this out. Shawn P.S. I found some info on the Digidesign users conference that might help clarify: Q: Can you use the 001 as the soundcard for all of your apps(games, dvd, 24bit sound files)? A: The Digi001 comes with a 2-channel wave driver, so it can be used by any application which uses the standard wave audio API. It can also be used by DirectSound applications via the DS-to-wave translation layer which is built into the operating system. The wave driver supports 16 and 24 bit audio natively, and 8 bit audio can also be played if the correct ACM codecs are installed. So, the short answer is: yes. Eric Day DAE Engineer There is really nothing to set up once the WaveDriver is installed and configured to be the preferred device in the Multimedia Control Panel>Audio Tab window. The audio will route through Outputs 1 & 2 from the Digi001 hardware. |

These types of things are not exposed through a Wave driver. Digi has a driver model called Direct I/O that permits the control of the hardware by applications that support this driver model. We do not support it - or any other driver model. This means that you can playback and record with the 001, but things like mixing, routing, FX processing will not be available to your through any of our applications. Peter |

Shawn - Before you go out and buy the 001, make sure you know that the 001 does not fly on any AMD K-6 chips. Make sure you have a Pent. II or III. AMD chips effect the preformance (host based) of the software significantly. Good luck, Marco Shawn Cushen wrote: >>>>Update: >>>>Yes, the 001 has wave drivers.
