I'm trying to remove the leading and trailing silences from a file but I can't... I'm surely missing something... help !

I want to remove the data that's below a level (let's say -80 dB), both at the start and end of the file.

I guess it's "Auto Trim / Crop" but I cannot find the correct way to do it.

Only you can define "correct" here. Fiddle with the Auto Trim/Crop controls until it sounds pleasing to you.

Whatever I'm doing, I've got a message "Theshold level not detected" and SoundForge does nothing.
However, there are silent data to remove !
Do I have to select data ?
Even with the manual and the help files, I can't use it...

"Theshold level not detected"

That means there is no signal strong enough to reach the thresholds you have set.

Do I have to select data ?

If you select nothing, the effect will be performed on the entire file.

I realize this idea is low-tech and doesn't scale well if you end up having thousands of files to process ... but ... how about select the part at the beginning you want to get rid of and press the Delete key, then select the part at the end you want to get rid of and press the Delete key again? It's just one file, don't kill yourself getting fancy.

I do exactly what Chienworks does, and to works very good.

I was warned in another thread to do all of your editing in .wma format. If you need .mp3 (as I do) then do the final save as .mp3. See http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=3&MessageID=542541

If you're using WMA instead of MP3 to avoid the quality loss then you really should be using WAV. WMA is a compressed format like MP3 is. WAV is uncompressed.

Chienworks,

Thank you. I will follow your advice.

I am still relatively new at working with audio files and definitely new at this program.
