Burning to Double Layer disks.

Hello, I'm using Architect Studio 3.0b and have made several single layer DVDs just fine.

I tried burning my first double layer disk and have run into a problem. Once the disk is burned and put into a DVD player the main menu comes up and that's it, I can't select any options and hitting play movie button does nothing.

I've tried it twice so far same result both times. One time the player said the disk was dirty, looks spotless. DVD will not work in Windows media play either.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dave

What DL media are you using? What speed are you burning at?

Memorex DVD+R DL and burning at 2.4.

Prepare your project but don't burn with DVDA. Download a trial version of Copy2DVD and let it burn the DVD - see how well that works.

Normally the problem in burning a DL disk is with the layer break -- switching from one to the other. Otherwise it's not much different that burning a SL blank. If you only get the menu, then I'd suspect the problem could be the media or the player unless the burn was totally botched.

RE: Media: If you search you'll probably find Verbatim is the brand to try, and see some complaints about Memorex. It's not a question of how good the disks are, but rather how compatible with your burner & players.

RE: Players: Not all stand-alone players will accept DL burned discs. You can increase the odds by burning the ID for a DVD ROM -- this mimics store bought movie DVDs. ImgBurn will do this automatically in most cases.

AFAIK there's one almost foolproof method of burning DL blanks, and that's using ImgBurn, with/without PgcEdit's assistance. The only thing different about DL as I mentioned is the layer break. It should be close as possible to the physical middle of all the data burned, and it occurs at a cell [which you create in DVDA by setting a chapter]. Either of these programs will show you those cells (chapters) closest to this midpoint -- you select which one. Details are linked/posted at the ImgBurn & PgcEdit sites.

Tips: You want the break to occur where there's a minimum of video action & the audio's relatively quiet. I've read some debate re: a lower total mux rate at the break. For a more *pro* solution, you can set the LB Chapter after everything else is done (scene menus etc.), then remove the Chapter, leaving just the cell for the break in PgcEdit. The best breaks occur at a new title, so on a multi-title disc, try to arrange the physical storage of your DVD accordingly -- the project tree's layout tends to be reflected in the disc layout, so moving something up or down can move it physically towards the beginning or end of the DVD.
