Subject:zero crossings in 9c

hi, i just wanted to voice a complaint about the way the zero cross snap feature works in 9c. it used to be that if i had zero cross snap enabled, sound forge would *always* snap to a zero crossing, ie it would not allow the cursor to land on a non-zero crossing. since i rarely have any use for edit points on non-zero crossings, i always had this turned on, and i could make very fast edits without clicks and pops.

the new zero cross snap behavior is far more finicky, to the point where it's frustratingly slow (at best) and totally useless to me (at worst). i can no longer get a quick, click-free region selected when zoomed out. i have to zoom in at least partially and "guide" sound forge to the specific zero-crossings i want it to snap to. often i don't want that kind of precision- i just want it to snap to the closest zero crossing to where i plopped the cursor down. sure, sometimes i need surgical precision, but not always. the new snap behavior means that i *always* have to be surgically precise and zoomed in. very frustrating and annoying. not only that, but the option to disable snapping below a certain zoom level doesn't seem to be working. or, should i say, that it's ALWAYS working, even though i don't have that option checked. when i'm zoomed in really close, zero-snap doesn't work even though i don't have that option checked in the preferences. :(

PLEASE change it back to the way it used to be, or at least give me a preferences option to change it back.

If you are zoomed to 1:8 or further out and Snap to Zero Crossings is enabled, then this should be the behavior you are seeing (selection ends always fall on a zero crossing). If that is not what you are seeing, are there any other possible factors involved? Other snapping options? Ruler format?

If you just want the always-snap behavior when zoomed further in:
Hold down Ctrl+Shift while selection Options->Preferences, select the "Internal" tab, and find and change the entry labeled "Zero Cross Snap Width (pixels)" to something larger (like 100 or more). Click or tab away to commit and then OK.

Also note that you can always re-snap the current selection with 'Z' or the current edge with 'Shift+Z'.

thanks for the tip on the hidden prefs- adjusting that setting helps, but it still doesn't put me back to the way it used to behave- ie, finding the nearest zero-crossing in the direction i'm dragging the cursor in (regardless of how many pixels away that zero crossing happens to be). the way it works now is very jerky and inelegant.

as for the behavior beyond 1:8 zoom, all i can say is that it's erratic. sometimes it finds zero crossings, other times it misses them completely, and sometimes it's, like, maybe one sample off from the actual closest zero crossing.

on an unrelated note, is there any way to increase the drag-select scroll speed? it's far too slow right now, even with the "default to slow scroll when drag selecting" option is un-checked.
