Posted by: Cokaine Date:3/6/2000 1:38:00 PM I'm really intrested in starting my own studio.I already have Sound Forge 4.5, but I'm finding it rather hard to use. what my question is,"Do I need any other programs besides soundforge in order to do any form of music production(making beats,adding audio etc...)?" If so, What programs would you recomend in order to produce the best quality music?

Gerald, A good sequencing program such as steinberg cubase or logic audio is what i recommend. however, these are on the pricey side, and cakewalk pro audio will deliver all the necessary features to get you started for half the price. sonic foundry's acid is fun to use for simple beat matching and mixing together pre-written music. for original compositions, the above mentioned three offer a lot more versatility. from various midi features to drum mapping, the latest releases include just about everything. check em out at their websites/ the keyboard magazine website has reviews: keyboardonline.com, and there are several other informative sites which should be easy to find. are you putting the studio together from scratch/ or just looking for the software? you'll need an audio card if starting from scratch. i recommend one of the echo cards: echoaudio.com. that's it. besides audio/midi cables, receiver, speakers, etc. you're set. have fun alex

Create music and songs, or do recording (or both). If you're just starting out, go to Acid 2.0 (not the pro version) and learn to use it. It is a very powerful program once you learn it. Get a good sound card, (one that will allow you to play and record at the same time), and add a keyboard (or better yet a keyboard synth unit KORG or Roland). MIDI is fine, but through Acid, you can record directly over the running loops, and create truly compex compositions without MIDI. Use the Std analog-out ports on your keyboard, directly to your sound card. Lots of RAM 64MB or better, and a BIG and fast hard drive 10gb minimum at a 7200 or better spin rate). Use Sound Forge to touch-up your finished Acid projects. With this setup, and a little imagination (and keyboard skill), you can do professional level work. Get Gigasampler, does the job better than any HW sampler, fraction of the price, incredible power. Reads Akai CDs, even. Get the cheapo LE version, does almost everything. I have Acid Pro 2, SF 4.5, CW Pro Audio 9 and Gigasampler LE 1.62 Also racks of outboard FX and synths and stuff but I hardly need them anymore. What you do need is a real fast PC, I mean FAST, with LOTS of RAM, I mean LOTS. E.g. 700MHz PC w 256 MB RAM. And a BIG screen, 19" at least. Plus a multichannel sound card, like Gadget Labs, or EgoSys WaMi Rack 24. Mounts up, eh?
