Sorry for the shameless bump but seems like the prob halle and I are having with capturing from a Canon XH-A1 should get a little attention. Anyone else having this problem? Anyone got any clues? Again, sorry for the bump. Just seems a bit silly to have to revert to Vegas 7 to capture after paying for the upgrade.

I am also experiencing the problem of individual "clips" for each frame. Could someone please let me know the proper setting to use for my XH-A1. I know people are using this camera... please lend a little help here. Thanks!

I'm amazed that this thread started awhile ago and there haven't been more people asking about this, and even fewer people with a solution. Seems to me like a pretty severe problem. In the meantime while it's being ignored by the powers that be, I've reverted to using Vegas 7 for importing. Kind of a crappy work-around but with no reply, whatcha gonna do?

I believe most people gave up long ago in using Vegas to capture.

I too had a lot of different problems capturing with my XH-A1 that I never had with my JVC HD-1 or Sonys using my old capture program (although Vegas would work, but never used).

I started using HDV Split and it works great so far. I would suggest trying it. It is free and only 570kb program size.

If you have a format change in the capture process (ie: 60i to 24F) it will choke, but they probably all would.

Another recent discovery; VLC Media Player will change ts files to ps files instantly. I need the ps files for making HD-DVDs (which are awesome with XH-A1 material).

Thanks Jeff, still doesn't make me feel any better about shelling out the cash I have for Vegas that claims to be able to do this.

And don't mind sayin, I'm wee bit miffed that "Marcel Marceau" is getting more attention on the Vegas forum than this. No disrespect to Grazie ... perhaps a little to Marcel Marceau.

I'm having the same issue. XHA1 24f - each frame captures as a clip. In addition, 24f HDV files are having a terrible fail rate - I can't tell you how many lockups-freezes-hangs-exception errors I've had... the countless hours of time I've lost...

I've got a service ticket open with Sony - we'll see how long it takes to get a response. But truth be told - I won't be filming in 24f anytime soon.

It's nice to know I'm not alone in the frustration of buying an extremely popular camera with a supposedly fantastic looking film setting at 24f and have not as yet gotten to see this great vision. I also get individual clips from individual frames. I have asked everywhere and am thinking of paying the $14.95 for an incident to get Sony to talk to me. I was told somewhere that we have a limited time of support for having bought Vegas 8? Did you pay for the individual incident and if so (and they ever reply) could you please keep us up to date. It seems everyone is looking for this answer and everyone who seems to have been successful at capturing their 24f is unwilling to help all of those who haven't. Thanks for any help from anyone.

Thanks for the reference Paul, but I have read that thread previously and that thread deals with the Canon DV20. The 20 does instill pulldown but the XH-A1 does not have any pulldown to remove according to the manual. I just find it hard to believe that Vegas 8 can't perform this function and it seems I have read descriptions of people using Vegas to capture the 24f yet noone steps forward to give the magic formula settings. I also don't have access to 7d to try it and I don't want to clutter up my laptop with excess software filling up my hard drive without the ability to remove it later. I have preordered Nero 8 and am hoping there will be functionality in that to help me, but I don't want to leave the Vegas environment just to capture. Come on Sony or someone. HELP US ALL!!

Here's an update. NERO 8 does not support 24f as a video capture mode. I have talked to Marc at Sony and he has escalated this problem to the upper engineers to trouble shoot. I will keep you updated but I'm sure Sony will probably notify us here when a fix is found. My biggest confusion is that the function works in 7d (I've heard) but doesn't in 8. I told Marc that whatever they did to change the code from 7d to 8 - don't. Let's hope there is a fix on the near horizon as I have a shoot on the 11th and 12th that I am unsure about shooting in 24f though that is my preferred setting. I don't have anyway to get the footage into Vegas 8. All we can do is wait.

Just to confirm again, capture for 24f footage from my A1 does work in Vegas 7 (both at my office and at home), but does not work in Vegas 8.

Thank God this is finally getting some attention, my quiet frustration has grown over the last month or so of dealing with this and not seeing much of a response here on the forum. Thanks for confirming the problem, with any luck as more people step up it might stand a chance of getting resolved.

I've said it before but one more time, what I'm most surprised about is what halle just said, CAPTURING A1 24F WORKS IN V7! C'mon Sony, ya already had it working.

I received a reply today from Sony:

Thanks for replying. Again, thank you for your continued patience in this matter. Please try turning off “Enable HDV scene detection” which might work around the issue. To find this option, please open the HDV video capture utility, then open the Prefs dialog. “Enable HDV scene detection” is the last item on this list. Please uncheck the box and hit Apply/OK, then try capturing again.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have follow up questions or need further assistance with this issue, please update this incident.

I have to recapture a reception later this week - so I'll see if it works... but I still hate how it's handled in Vegas. Again - I can't tell you how many crashes I've had trying to edit film shot in 24f... There's lots to love about Vegas but it's not stopping me from learning Premiere.

In my first conversation with Sony we went over this same enable or disable HDV scene detection option. I had already tried it and it doesn't fix the problem. The update didn't fix the problem either. I still can't capture Canon 24f. I wasted my support time by reporting this bug and I still haven't received a reply or answer to fix this problem. COME ON SONY!! I HAVE VIDEO TO EDIT AND ADOBE IS LOOKING BETTER ALL THE TIME!!!

cant say ive had this issue with V7. im yet to clear teh system of projects to be able to instal V8a to try it out though.

When capturing with v7, i do get audio and video lagging behind in frames. The footage is ok, but as mentioned, previewing is non existant

I'm also having this problem. I posted a while back on some other threads about this problem. Like others it works fine in Vegas 7 but not 8...so right now i'm jsut capturing through 7 and editing in 8...

...if a fix shows up..let me know...

I have two XH A1's and am sad to say, I am running into the same problem with Vegas 8. Oh joy. I guess I will try reintalling vegas 7 to use it . Thanks

Here's an update - Sony support recommended I use HDV Split to capture Canon 24f video. They also emailed to me that they assume the problem has been solved if I don't reply within 10 days. I replied that HDV Split crashes on my system in a conflict with Muvee Producer and I didn't feel I should have to go outside of an expensive all-inclusive program like Vegas to import something that apparently worked in version 7. I suggest everyone that is affected by this should submit the problem to Sony so we can get a workable answer for all of the XH-A1 users. I will soon be an Adobe customer if I don't get a solution. Help out and submit your problem.

It seems like it can capture as well as manage your camera. I have not tried it yet, but I will as soon as I have my XHA1 - hopefully next week. I have close relations to Canon because we sell theese babies at work, so I'll try and figure out how this works out, and when I have something to go with I'll contact Sony support.

Btw. OT: what else do you guys think of the camera itself, image- and audiowise. How is low-light shooting. I have until now only had Sony's - this is my first Canon, but as written elsewhere it seems to be a good deal.

Rock solid.. rings a litle sluggish and you HAVE to be very subtle with them... unlike the DVX/HVX the iris is ramped according to how fast you move it, with the HVX, its a set speed and its easy to control.
Its all about practice.
The images from this unit are incredible, albeit slightly flat in colour (even after tweaking in cam) however curves in Vegas soon rectify this whereby you wil nearly pee yourself as to how good they look.
One issue i have is teh front lens element. Its THE biggest bitch to clean.. there is some sort of coating on it, which eventhring sticks to.. Not impressed as i need to use specific felt coth to clean smears.. forget using a blower or anythign else.
Its THE worst front end (in regard to cleaning) ive ever used. The HVX just wipes off cleanly with no smearing))

((Audio is ok cnsideirng its highly compressed. The earphone jack EQ sucks dogs balls so dont rely on it for acurate mixing setups. Wht you hear in the headfones is NOT what you get on your recording by a looooong shot))

How is low-light shooting.
((Ok up to 6+ db gain.. any more and its unnaceptable (To me.. some people are ok with it, im not ok with it +9 would have been ok i think... but there is no +9 gain on this)
Colour <skin tone> starts to lobsterfy beyond this and i find that skin tone over gradated luminance ieg sidelit from the sun) sometimes makes the darker/shadowed areas of the skin slightly redder than what im used to . The A1 is very red heavy so ive been tweaking for several days to get it "right" for me.

One thing do not be afraid of custom presets as these are your friend..

Yes - saw the price and could't believe it - it should be a giveaway or $25 or something like that as downloadversion, manual and everything is on pdf anyway to download.
