Subject:Stutter Effect Possible in Acid 1.0?
Posted by: classicmix

I am trying to do what is called a "stutter" effect....it is
similar to the "Gapper" effect in SoundForge. However, the
Gapper effect ADDS silence to a piece of the .wav...making
the .wav longer. A stutter effect, rather, replaces parts
of the .wav with silence, thus keeping the .wav the same
length but sounding pretty cool.

Think of playing a portion of a song on your stereo. There
is a 10 second part where Mariah Carey does her normal 10
second screem at a steady pace. Now, imagine turning the
speakers on and off at a particular beat pattern while she
is screaming. That is called a Stutter effect. Or another
is example is beating on your chest while talking.

What I find very cool about Acid is that when you Preview
the loop, you will see the division lines that Acid used to
stretch it. Let's say there are 8 lines. Now when you
click on Edit In Sound Editor, SoundForge pops up with
that .wav...but WITHOUT those lines. It would be awesome if
those lines came over as Markers. If that is possible with
1.0, I can't find out how to do it. If not, is it possible
in 2.0?

The stutter effect is very cool for remixing. It would be a
snap to have Acid drop the division lines marking the 8 or
16 perfect segments of the loop, fire up SoundForge, then
wherever I feel like, I can go between the Markers and Mute
out sections.

Anyone know how to do this? I wrote a VisualBasic app years
ago that helped me out making Stutter effects...I told the
app how long the perfect loop was in sample length, told the
app how many "stutters" I wanted, then the app told me the
start and stop times to Mute and not mute.

Thanks in advance!

Eric,

Although it's not the automatic technique you were hoping for, one
idea that you could use to achieve this effect (if I understand
correctly what you're trying to do) would be to use the "Time Zoom"
button (magnifying glass next to the bottom scroll bar) to zoom way
into your event's wave form (the up and down arrow keys allow you to
do the same thing more quickly). You could then create the silence in
your event by splitting it at the points where you want the silence
to begin and end. You now have three events instead of the original
one. Delete the middle of the three events, and you have your silence
without adding time to the track.

Hmmm...I don't quite understand what you mean by "splitting" the
single event into 3 events. I've used the magnifying glass a zillion
times to home into a part of the file so I can make a clean loop. If
you could respond with a tad more detail about the splitting that
would be great.

What about the generic feature I asked about...the one about when
opening SoundForge via the Edit In Sound Editor feature of Acid that
when SoundForge opens up, it would be nice to have those divisions
(that's what I call them) of where Acid is using to stretch the sample
appear as Markers in SoundForge...this way I can do nifty things to
the sample in SF and know exactly where the beats, quarterbeats, etc
are going to fall if I want to add effects, muting, equalization, etc.
Is this a feature of 1.0 or 2.0? If not, I would like to send this
as a request for an already great product.

While I am here, what is this new "bounce" feature I saw on the site
about 2.0? I believe we are going to buy 2.0 anyway because we love
1.0 soooo much! :+)

On a side note, this forum software never produces any results when I
search for my username or "stutter"...The software goes to a new page,
and it is completely blank and Netscape's Status bar is DONE. Just
something to pass along...otherwise I have no real way of tracking
this thread if it goes for days.

To split an event, place the cursor at the point where you want the
split to happen. Right click, and choose "Split at Cursor" (the
shortcut way is to place your cursor, and type an "S" on the
keyboard.) Your event is now split into two seperate events, with the
first event ending, and the second event starting where the split
took place. If you were to play it back at this point, it would sound
exactly the same as it did before you split the event. Then split the
second event, and you now have three total. Delete the second to
create your silence.

Another idea is to experiment with "Amplitude Modulation" from the
XFX 3 plug-in pack. You might achieve the effect that you want.

As for the bounce feature, you might want to make use of it in this
situation too. It allows you to create a new .wav file and track in
your project from one or more existing tracks in your project. In
this case, you might want to preserve your original loop, and create
a new loop once you have your stutters in place so that you don't
have to go through the splitting process every time you want to use
the loop with that effect. Here's how you do it. Select the track or
tracks you want to "bounce" to a new track. Choose "Edit | Mix to New
Track". A new .wav file will be created (you make decisions on what
to call it and where to save it), and a new track will be added to
your project into which you can draw events of the newly created
file. Note that if you have defined a loop region in your project,
only the portion of your track(s) that fall within the region will be
included in the newly created .wav file. There is a helpful
discussion of this feature in the help files if you have more
questions.

I've forwarded your feature request to the product management team
for ACID/Sound Forge, and your search problem to the web team.

Have fun!

Eric, thanks for the heads up on the search engine problem. I've got
it taken care of now. Give it another try and let me know if you
continue to have trouble.
