Question about importing DVD Handycam

In need of a new camcorder and would like to know if the DVD Handycam is a reasonable choice for using with Vegas Studio. Will the program import directly from the miniDV when placed into the desktop's DVD drive? Or are there other steps that need to be taken? Is the quality acceptable?

The only real appeal--at this time--is the download/import time of the video from a DVD Handycam. Is it worth it?

What model camera are you talking about. Unless it is a minDV the format is completly different. Some of the newer camcorders already produce a mpg file and not the avi. If you want what more control on editing choose a avi format carmcorder. Remember "mpg" is a compressed file just like jpg

I had to deal with the same dilemma myself only a couple of months ago. I went for the miniDV, and I have never regretted my choice. Vegas and miniDV are a great team: absolutely stable, and never a dropped frame. Make sure your pc has firewire. Yes, capturing is realtime, but hey, you need to watch your footage anyhow, before editing!
MiniDV cassettes are also pretty stable for archiving.
The fact that the best High Def camcorder (Canon HV20) available also opts for minidv is a telling sign.
This is a nobrainer, really, go for minidv. If you have a reasonable budget, go for the Canon HV20, if not, go for the best quality ccd your budget allows.
