you're on the right track. what codec was the file encoded with? once you know this, you can get the right codec. note that avi is not a codec, just a container for many different codecs.

How do you know what codec was used I know that the files I have can be played by Divx player. I have that codec but Vegas 7 still will not play th files Inspite that I have already enabled "play 3rd party codecs" in Vegas options!?

Gspot is a good idea -- but if your AVI's are MPEG-4 which Vegas will not handle, then converting the files is the best idea...
