Subject:can SF9 enable right click to drag-paste?

Dragging a highlighted region into another window to paste it there was very easy and useful in SF8.
In SF9 it seems somewhat more complicated, (and even dangerous) unless I've got some setting wrong?
when I have highlighted an area that I want to drag into another window
- it will only accept the "drag" idea, when the mouse is moved strictly vertically, any horizontal component in the move will make SF9 think I want to open another region, so I have to be a lot more careful about the dragging motion
- it used to be possible to hold the left mouse button and right click to toggle between paste and mix mode, in SF9 mix is the default and it does not react to the right mousebutton . fortunately there is the Ctrl key to set it to paste, but that takes another hand... another slight complication

both of them are not major, but they do affect productivity

is there a way to have the same intuitive behaviour, where I can drag in all directions and the rigkt click toggles mix and paste?

thanks

to look at what I mean go here:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5629409156751934738&hl=en

(another odd side effect in this kind of work is that the mix-region always seems to remember the size of the previous mix-area, not the current one)

and for full disclosure: sometimes SF9 crashes when doing this (attempting a drag and paste-drop), all changes lost, happens pretty regularly, I think mostly right after starting SF and trying to do this. I cannot reliably reproduce it, but I managed to make a video of it, so about 1 in 5 attempts will "work" and crash it)
look at the crash here:

I'm getting natural behaviour in SF9. I create a selection in a window, and either left-click (hold), drag to new destination (either same or different window), and whilost still holding mouse button, click the other mouse button for paste/mix choice.
The inverse also works - starting off by holding the right-mouse button.

Again, with remembering region size - I'm finding it adapts to my latest (and thus current) selection.

And also unfortuntely for you I get 0 crashes with this too.

Got to ask the obvious first - but you have installed the latest (9c) ?update.

yes, 9c build 405

you did look at the videos, right? (I'm not making this up!)

per your note, I tried highlighting the region holding the right mouse key, that works too, but it also gives me the "m" cursor for mixing, not "p" for pasting

except for the crash (which is intermittent), I'm getting all that behaviour consistently.

and this one doesn't seem to depend on file size or number of cut regions (happens even in a tiny 10 sec file with nothing in it)

maybe I'll try a re-install when I have time.

meanwhile: can anyone reproduce this?

This will show you the behaviour I get.

thanks for the help Ken,
yes, that's what I was hoping to get

I now re-downloaded and re-installed it and - voila - that fixed the mix/paste behaviour .... except for the crash... it did that again (only in Mix mode)...

(procedure: reinstall, start program, hit record button, record silence for 30 sec, then highlight 5sec, drag to workspace to create a file, try to append more hihglights to the end of the new file and on the second attempt, when toggling to mix, it crashed... but I guess my hopes of someone reproducting that aren't high.)

thanks again for the help

At least you have made progress.. And your other problem was sussed and pending solution in update 9d.

Do you get an error report on the crash - it'll help the dev's here narrow it down if you can get one = they're spot on out working things out.

Just tried seeing if I could get a repro on the crash - nope - works fine for me.

when I do the forced shutdown with the task manager I get this window that you always get with these things... "you chose to end the non-responding application....do you want to send an error report?", but that's a microsoft thing, isn't it? I always click no... if I click yes, do the Soundforge people get it? or could I somehow re-direct or capture it?
otherwise I don't know how to get an error report.
Or does SF do a core dump somewhere in a temp directory?

It's been a very long time since I have seen one of those - but somewhere there is an option to view details, and see what the content of the report is.

Then simply copy text and paste here.

It will also inform you of any additional files that are being sent in case they have any extra info.

ok, I'll try that.
But it will be a little while, I have another project for the next couple of weeks.
When I get it again I'll post it here.

The next time you encounter a hang or freeze and have to end-task, please run the tool described in this knowledge base article and forward the results to tech support.

Thanks,
J.
