I used a cheap device to record a telephone interview, and it recorded my questions very loudly, and my interviewee's responses very quietly. Is there a "quick 'n' dirty" way to select only audio data above or below a certain volume, so that I could increase or decrease all of that data with a single step or series of steps? I don't care about the resulting quality of the sound - I just need to be able to hear my interviewee's responses better so I can transcribe them. I could boost the volume of everything but my questions are already too loud. Any tips would be most appreciated! |

A quick way. Use a compressor (effects-dynamics). Try the graphic. Setting such as "soft knee" will probably do you fine without having to explain compressors... The threshold is your magical item - if the preset is not quite good enough, adjust the threshold to a point just under the response amplitude (interviewee), then it'l sliughtly compress the interviewee, but compress you much more so (imaging squeezing the volume down a bit). It should reduce the difference between you and them quite nicely, and very quickly, HTH Ken |
