Digilogue has some freeware Direct X filters that work great. They are called Blueline Effects I think. I can't remember the website off hand but I know I have it somewhere. Bruce, Thanks for posting that web address. Also, I really enjoy your professional insight on many of the things going on in the NG's. Especially on the Cakewalk site. I kind of just study around instead of posting because my ambitions often far outweigh my expertise. But allow me to say thanks now. I agree, the noisiness of good outboard gear is always welcome in the dance/electronica field especially. This genre thrives on expirementation. That's what makes it great for us as both artists and listeners. I often add percussion using a mic, a human hand and anything I can fit in my project studio (among other types of funky research). Lots of them. Those are all very standard effects. You might also want to use outboard effects and synths to create some of these, record and loop them, then import them into ACID. That will be less expensive processor wise...you need a very quick machine to run many different layers of effects, and the kind of processing you're talking about would definitely stack up pretty quickly. The good news is that flangers and resonance filters are fairly "cheap" effects, so you can probably run at least a few in realtime. -- Bruce A. www.digilogue.com Those effects are certainly NOT bad for the price, and they have an envelope follower in that collection that works reasonably well, although not as well as the old Boss T-WAH, which is still patched into my system for just such effects. Sometimes we make the mistake of not using our outboard gear in ACID...it's a great way to get some of the_actual shit_going on in your sound. When I'm producing this kind of music, my studio starts looking like a freak show, with stomp boxes, weird little speakers, old funky analog synths, etc, hooked up everywhere. -- Bruce A. I've posted elswhere on this forum on how I was using Native Instrument's Generator "soft" synth as a plug-in to Acid. It is a modular synthesizer construction kit that allows you to built just about any kind of synth, analog style sequencer, sample playback synth or effect (delay, phaser, reverb etc.) that you could imagine. It can be used as a realtime MIDI synth or as a DirectX plugin-in. One of my favorite uses is to put an LFO modulated resonant LP filter on an Acid track. I suppose that you could also use the faders in real time or through MIDI. I have a feeling that this is the kind of thing that you might be looking for. The drawback is that it's not cheap ($298.00 US) and it can be somewhat proccessor intensive if you build an instrument that is too complicated. However, something like an LFO modulated filter isn't too bad. Check out the website at: http://www.native-instruments.com. BTW my favorite "soft" synth is VAZ Modular, which I find to be much easier to use and just about as flexible. Unfortunately it does not work as a DirectX plug-in. I strongly suggest that anyone interested in putting together a synth based computer music system check these exciting products out. But I digress... I suppose that another option might be Sonic Foundry's XFX 3 plug-in which has a Wah pedal effect that might also work as a resonant filter of sorts. Good luck! |
