Audio volume

What is the best way to make an entire track, narration, be all at a certain volume? Is there something that I can just put on the track that will effect everything? Or do I need to go piece by piece and just play it by ear? My premiere is only two months away and I want everything to be perfect and I am not very good at the audio end. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,
David

Probably the simplest thing to start with is Wave Hammer. This is relatively automatic and it most likely will do better than an inexperienced ear can. Set the threshold so that it is about equal to the average of the quieter sounds. Set the compression ratio to something midway to start, maybe 6 or 8:1. Set the output gain to a little below zero, maybe -0.05. put a checkmark next to Auto gain compensate.

You can listen to the audio playing while you adjust these settings. If you want things to be more even reduce the threshold and increase the ratio. If it sounds too monotone then increase the threshold and reduce the ratio.

You may want to divide the project up into a few sections and set different parameters for each section depending on the dynamics and overall volume you want for each section.
