I appreciate some of the fixes in version b, especially the saving of previous actions. But the classic crossfade behavior was one of the most intuitive and useful features in every version up until now. Even Vegas will automatically determine a crossfade when you slip over another cut to one already there. (Sonar does this also.) Current version SF you get the annoying mix/replace dialogue and you have to guess at some amount of fade in/out time. The old way gave you a choice - crossfade or mix, all you had to do was hit the alt or control key while dragging over and the amount of drag determined the crossfade very well.. Please Please Please bring this action back. For very fine symphonic broadcast editing this was so useful.

Granted the missing crossfade.

FWIW - It's easy to simply choose the "[Sys] Replace with fades" and then drag your fade in/out points and also readjust the fade times on the wave display - no guessing, and no key holding necessary - and you can zoom about at will until you're happy too :).

Would it be sufficient for the mix/paste drag logic to notice when you are past the edge of a file and draw/override the fade-in length to the area that overlaps?

That sound more like the way it works in Cubase4 in which case - I like the idea. Should facilitate quick combining of tracks if it intellisenses the end of the first file.

And, Sony, while you're at it...

Could you also add back the display of the start time (lower right of the distination file) while you drag the source material?

This function used to show precisely the location of your leading edge before you let go of the mouse key -- a small, but useful classic behavior that disappear in SF9.

Yes, that too.
The resolution ratio display is pretty much useless to my work flow and would be nice if it could be turned off. (not displayed)

The suggestion sounds like its on the right track and very similar to the old crossfade so that the amount of overlap determines the contours of the fades. That would be quite helpful. Sorry I didn't answer sooner - I was on vacation. (a rare time off)

SF9 is not the same at all. Just finished talking with Matt K at Sony tech support. I'm looking for the same thing -- End of a performance, fade back the music/applause and lay in a voiceover at the end. A no-brainer in SF8 Mix. Not possible in SF9. Seems it's not possible to fade the destination file. Really dissapointed.

Yes, yes yes! There absolutely needs to be a simple crossfade feature like in previous versions with out having to go through all the complicated mix paste settings. It should take the clipboard contents and crossfade it using the length of the existing selected data.

Crossfading and mixing are two completely different operations and should be treated as such. This seems like such an elementary thing, I can't imagine why sony would remove this capability which I use on a daily basis in V8. Unbelievable!

Please bring the simple crossfading features back. If I had known that this feature was taken out then I would *never* have upgraded in the first place.

... and while you're at it Sony, please get rid of the "Drag Mix" function that's ruining my life in SF9. It is practically impossible now to drag out a selection to create a new file (something I do lots, or used to, to check EQ, FX, etc.). I use a graphics tablet instead of a mouse - have to because of my fingers - and it's making life next-to impossible. The old way, needing a keypress at the same time, was great.

Surely this feature could just be a check-box in options/edit?

The drag mix methadology is great - to get it to work easier - just make sure you start your dragging motion in a vertical direction first.
With regards to doing this to check EQ, FX etc - can you describe your methodology a little here. If you're doing what I'm thinking, there is an easier way that will negate your need to create new parts.

Also, if you're a fan of keyboard shortcuts. Get your selection, Ctrl+C (copy), and Ctrl+E (paste to new). No mouse troubles that way at all.

That's a good point, and probably the easiest solution.

If I use the stylus (moving it vertically first) I end up with a "stuck" highlighted area on the source file, which doesn't go away even when I select a new area. The area 'left behind' is the same length as the copied section and its start sits wherever the mouse pointer leaves the source window. It's presumably where the paste/mix would occur if Id intended to do that. It doesn't seem to cause problems, but it's a nuisance.

I still wish you could turn off paste-mix within the same file with a checkbox.
