Hi, I am using Sound Forge version 9.0B and am wondering about maximizing volume. I make audio recordings of trains and edit them in Sound Forge; I am wondering how can I go about maximizing the volume without doing anything to alter the quality of the recording? I have tried using the Wave Hammer maximize volume feature and I currently use the "Limit at 6 dB and maximize" but I'm noticing slight differences in my audio. How can I just maximize the volume? Thanks, |

Peak normalize to 0dB. This is the most increase you can get without altering the audio. The only way to get it to sound louder is to use compression (which wave hammer does) and this will alter it. |

Peak normalize to 0dB. This is the most increase you can get without altering the audio. Anything you do - especially any sort of normalizing is altering the audio. |

But don't normalise to 0dB - it MAY promote distortion in some playback devices. Try Normalise to -0.3dB instead. which is safer'. geoff |

Okay, let me see if I have this correctly: Don't use wave hammer; rather, normalize to -0.3 dB? I don't think I have this right so please correct me. |

Yep. WaveHammer is (probably) doing compress as well as maimising volume. Normalisation (straight off Process menu or toolbar) is a linear gain process and should not change the nature of the sound. Message last edited on8/14/2007 8:09:48 PM byGeoff_Wood. |

Actually, normalizing is one of the least sound altering things that can be done. It alters the audio less than any other effect or process except Reverse, although i'm sure human perception of reversed audio would indicate a dramatic alteration. |
