Subject:Editing out the left channel

Hi,

Is there a way to delete (edit out) the left channel of a stereo track in Music Studio? I have an MP3 file which is a 'play-along' for drummers, wherein the drums have been recorded to the left track only, so that the user can dial down the left channel and hear no drums while practicing to the band in the right channel. I've loaded the file into ACID Music Studio 6 but cannot find a way to delete the left (drum) channel.

I'd like to delete the left channel completely and then replace the left channel with a duplicate of the right channel, so that the signal will come through both L and R of my headphones (essentially "right channel mono" through both sides). Any suggestions on how to selectively edit out one channel of a stereo signal?

Thx, Kevin J.

Since I had no luck with Music Studio 6 in being able to independently edit the left or right channel, I downloaded "Audacity", the freeware audio editor and it worked beautifully.

Since I could find no reference to this capability in the Music Studio user manual, and received no suggestions from this forum I have to assume this type of edit is beyond Music Studio 6's feature set.

Howdy,

I don't have MS6 but I think it should be able to do this...
Render your original file to a new mono file by first pulling down the Left Channel on the Master Bus to [-Inf.]. You should then be able to convert that rendered file to a stereo file.

Hope that helped.

Thx for the response Dan,

OK, I'm with you there...so now I'll have a saved mp3 or WAV file with only the Right Channel audible.

>You should then be able to convert that rendered file to a stereo file.<

Can you walk me through how that's done? Thx.

Actually there is no need to convert the mono file back to stereo. Leave it as mono. Any place you use the mono file it will play back in both the left & right channels, just like a stereo file would.

I just tried what you suggested and unfortunately the file still plays back as a mono signal audible through the Right Channel only.

Here's what I did:
1. After loading in the stereo mp3 file I pulled the Left master fader down to -Inf so that the Left Channel was inaudible.
2. I then rendered the file as an mp3.
3. I re-opened that mp3 in Mus Studio 6, and listened back.

No dice...
As can clearly be seen and heard in MS6, the Right Channel signal is coming through the Right Channel only (as I would expect, actually)...i.e., the Rt Channel is not coming through both sides of my headphones, which is what I need.

No prob, though...
As I said, I was able to easily accomplish this in Audacity with Audacity's "Spilt Stereo Track" feature, which allows one to edit each stereo channel individually. So the good news is I have a way to accomplish my task. Thx for the suggestions.

KevinJ,

When you render the file, make sure you're rendering to a MONO format. If you render to a stereo format, then it will have the right channel only as you say.
And Chienworks is correct, the resulting mono file will play in both channels.

Ahhhh sooo! It's working perfectly now. I had never ventured into that realm of MS6, drilling down into the Custom Templates where one can enable "mono encoding".

Indeed. Thx to you both, Dan and Chienworks, for the insight. It will now be much simpler for me to do my work, without having to go outside of MS6; particularly since I need to do a fair amount of looping (for practice purposes), which is not one of Audacity's forte. Thx again!

Guys, here's the way to do it without ever having to render a file.

There's a free plug-in called stereo panner.

It gives you independent control of the left and right channels in the stereo spectrum.

With this plug-in you can mute, reverse, or set either channel as mono.
