Subject:Read & Write FLAC audio files

You can read and write FLAC audio files with Sony ACID now. The new Sony Soundforge 9.0b that just came out added FLAC audio file read/write support. I knew that most components of any Sony Creative Software are swappable, so I wrote an instruction set here for you that will give the same support to Sony ACID. I discovered this trick for Vegas originally, but somebody wrote that this would work for ACID too.

How to add FLAC audio file read/write support to Sony ACID:

Before you begin: Can you open and extract the contents of http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/ie/ieak/techinfo/deploy/60/en/cab.mspx?mfr=trueCabinet (.cab) files? If you can not, then download and install http://www.7-zip.org/download.html7-Zip file archiver.

Step 1. Download the http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/step2.asp?DID=726Sony Soundforge 9.0b installer. You may notice that the Sony Soundforge 9.0b installer is approximately 70.92mb in size. Installation of this software is not necessary, but you will be unpacking the setup files.

Step 2. Unpack the setup files. The installer can automatically unpack these files into a setup directory ( which is likely C:\Program Files\Sony Setup\Sound Forge 9.0\ ).

Step 3. In a new window, navigate to the Soundforge setup directory and locate the flacplug Cabinet (.cab) file. You may notice that there will be several other Cabinet (.cab) files with names like ac3plug.cab and help.cab, but you will not need them.

Step 4. In a new window, navigate to your (Sony ACID software)\FileIO Plug-Ins directory and create a new folder named flacplug. You may notice that there are other folders with names like aviplug and oggplug.

Step 5. Extract the contents of the flacplug Cabinet (.cab) file into your newly created flacplug\ directory. You may notice that there are now two files in the flacplug directory named flacplug.dll & flacplug.chm.

Congratulations. You're done!

Thanks for the tip.

Doesn't work for me. I successfully followed your instructions, but Acid doesn't recognize FLAC format files for import, nor does FLAC show up in the render format options. Is there a step I'm missing?

It works here.

I've rebooted and tried several things, but it still doesn't work for me. I'm using WinXP, all the latest service packs and packages. Using Acid Pro 6.0b (versions c and d are unstable on my system). Could it be this only works in version 6.0d?

I notice the FLAC Plugin Help file says: "You can use the FLAC plug-in to import and render WAV and WAV64 files." says nothing about importing and rendering FLAC files.

If anyone has a suggestion, I'd appreciate it. It would be very useful for me to directly export FLAC format.

feign, if you've installed Acid into the following directory:

C:\Program Files\Sony\ACID Pro 6.0\

Then after completing my steps you would have the following files:

C:\Program Files\Sony\ACID Pro 6.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\flacplug\flacplug.dll
C:\Program Files\Sony\ACID Pro 6.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\flacplug\flacplug.chm

If this hasn't worked, then I'm not sure what is causing the problem for you. ACID should have immediately recognized FLAC audio files as well as added FLAC as a rendering format. I hope this does help though.

As I said above, I installed it properly. The files are there as you stated. But no FLAC recognition or rendering. Oh well. I lived without it before, I'll continue to live without it. Thanks anyway.
