No news from Summer Namm about AP 7?
I am really waiting for that Vista version to go with my new PC, installing XP is not an option because of all the other hardware components in the PC with Vista drivers...

Somebody got a hint? I love the Acid product, and don`t want to make a switch even though a lot of the competitiors are having sale campaigns (Cubase 4 at half price with Cubase LE, Project 5 at half price on so on...)

Best regards, Ken/Norway

Yes, a shame, I was hoping that 7 would be out for NAMM as well. Should be sometime soon anyway.

All your hardware will work under XP no? There is no guarantee that Acid 7 will be stable in it's first release, usually we have to wait until at least version c or d before the bugs are being ironed out.

I think you are maybe hoping too much that you can install a brand new version of Acid on a brand new PC running Vista and not create headaches for yourself.

I produce music full time, and I don't know anyone in the business that has moved to Vista yet, I know some people that have messed about with it, but no-one is using it full time.

I have dual opteron PCs, so at some stage I will upgrade and get the supposed performance improvements of 64bit, but not for at least another year.

Vista -- will only introduce more concerns for media developers. After 3 years or so of proven stability, media developers may consider vista as a aplatform.

Agree, I didn't even move to XP until SP1. Microsoft cannot be trusted. If Acid Pro (& Samplitude, can't survive without it) were ported to Linux I would move like a shot.

Vista is not a realistic option for pro audio right now.

Some of us have moved to Vista - and I don't look back at all. Running both 32 bit and 64 bit versions - since SForge 9 I have not had any problems. All my hardware works correctly, and I get some extras things that XP doesn't have in some softwares (extra settings etc). Ok - I'm using Acid 7, not Pro but I can cope with the reduced functionality for the short / medium term.
Sure - some things aren't perfect for everyone - but I migrated when it was right for me - and MS and other companies are adding support for hardware at an impressive rate for many things.

And at least Vista64 is finally addressing the lack of support for 64bit software and hardware - XP64 got nowhere - whereas Vista has got further already. And there are some nice native 64bit solutions around the corner.

Just for now - as with everything - it's a mixed bag as people wait for drivers and other support.

What kind of audio interface are you using on Vista 64?

Thanks for your posts:-)

I know a lot of people will not move to Vista because of risks of stability issues, but some are happy about it (as Kennymusicman for instance). I don`t want to go to the "trouble" of first installing XP, and then back to Vista, with drivers for everything. So, I am looking for Pro 7 for the choice of having av Vista version for Sony custmers (as is available for the users of Cubase, Live, Sonar, Project 5, Reason etc). I love the Acid product, and don`t want to change, but it would be nice to have the option for a Vista version soon, I would at least think that Sony doesn`t attract much new customers with the existing Pro version. I know Sony has a policy of not posting any roadmaps for their forthcoming releases. But I thought that since Acid Music is now on version 7, that Pro 7 was just around the corner. I was just hoping for some hint, like is it planned in a couple of days/weeks - or by the end of the year - or next year. Just so that I could make my choice to wait for it, or go with another sequencer because of the Vista compability (that I really don`t want, but would consider...)

Best regards, Ken

Yep, understand fully, but there's no chance Sony will say anything before it's actually released - this was true when the product was owned by Sonic Foundry also.

It will be here when it's here!

> I know a lot of people will not move to Vista because of risks of stability issues

True but therer really no stability issues to be afraid of here. Vista is more stable than XP for me and not only that, it recovers a lot more gracefully from problems. I've had two crashes in Vista since I bought my new computer a month ago. Both were related to the latest NVidia Forceware driver and both crashes happened while playing a game (2004's Thief Deadly Shadows).

After both crashes Vista dumped the physical memory then rebooted on its own and when back in Windows it opened a dialog with the original error message displayed (which I could copy and send to NVidia if I wanted to... a nice touch) then searched for and provided advice to "fix" the issue.

In XP, after a crash like that I would have been lucky to be able to boot back into Windows without booting with a recovery disk first to restore a registry backup. And Vista would be the less stable OS? Riiight.

In general Vista has more failsafes, better stability and much stronger security (to the point of being annoying at times) than XP and it looks like it will be easier to recover from any major disaster caused by misbehaving apps and drivers.

All in all, it acts and feel like a much more solid OS than XP and this is not suprising since it's the Windows version that probably was in development and public beta for the longest time. No one needs to wait for SP1 or anything. Vista works better than XP SP2 now, as it is. n the other hand, I'm orunning Vista on modern and poweful hardare while my XP machine is basically a 2001 era system although it was top of the line then and has recieved a few upgrades.

The choice to go full 64-bit is another issue entirely but I'm also not looking back. The performance gains are real and significant, especially for resource intensive apps like server software and audio/multimedia apps which require flawless real-time performance to work well.

I really hope that Acid Pro 7 not only supports VIsta but 64-bit Vista on 64-bit hardware. Anything less would be a mistake for Sony IMO.

FWIW, I'm currently running ACID Pro 6.0d under Vista. I managed to get Media Manager working...that was the hardest nut to crack - and I need to run ACID as an Administrator (otherwise it won't register plugins or start Media Manager), but it's working fine for me now. Granted, I probably don't "push" ACID as far as a lot of other people do, but I'm using it quite frequently these days.

I'd also second earlier comments from thenoizzbox about the general stability of Vista - IMHO it's GREAT. I'm a developer and tend to beat the heck out of my machine with tools and tweaks, and my experience with Vista has been really solid. I'm OK with having to run some apps with elevated privileges - to me it helps to know when this is required. Not to say there haven't been some hiccups, but I'm not turning back now. IMO, any software vendors who choose to ignore Vista for the time being are missing a great opportunity. The first vendors to seize it will do well.

As I've said elsewhere (in the Windows Vista Users forum), I'm disappointed that Sony Creative won't support Vista with a point upgrade, but will rather introduce a major version - which of course we'll have to pay for - but I've resigned myself to reality on this issue. And as others have mentioned, it's clearly time for a new version anyway. IMO ACID 6.0 was a really dramatic update for this app, but it still needs some other features to stack itself up against other DAW software.

The risks of Vista are just too great at this stage, and system crashes or other issues during a project would mean that I'm unable to work, and therefore unable to earn. I have in excess of $20,000 worth of software on my computer, and before I switch I want to be 100% certain that I don't lose any of that investment. I'm happy to wait another one or two years and let others do the beta testing.

I'm with you. 1 to 2 years for vista. XP is really stable for me.

>FWIW, I'm currently running ACID Pro 6.0d under Vista. I managed to get Media Manager working...that was the hardest nut to crack

After getting Media Manager stable on my XP system I have enjoyed using this tool. Along with driver issues, concerns over Vista support have kept me from upgrading. If you have any tips/methods for getting Media Manger to work please share.

>IMO ACID 6.0 was a really dramatic update for this app

The upgrade was very dramatic despite the basic similarity between Acid 5. If you aren't using some of the more advanced features it could seem the same. I have always mixed elements on different tracks anyways.

>but it still needs some other features to stack itself up against other DAW software.

Not every DAW is going to do everything. There is always some "wish list" for any software product on the market. Sony has several products that fit specific "niches" so I don't foresee Acid overlapping Vegas & Sound Forge. However, I think better Vista support and multi-core functionality will be top of the list this next time around.

>I'm with you. 1 to 2 years for vista. XP is really stable for me.

I just bought another XP Professional license for my Quad 2 Core system simply because it has been stable and I cannot afford to wait around for drivers and product support for Vista. 64-bit programs will be the next big area as we get into true 64-bit operating systems and software.

Maybe its for the vista forum but i hate to see ppl talking bout soft they havent used especially when its bout an operating system .Vista this ,vista that etc... Its the same old story as when xp came out. Almost every1 was saying :i'm sticking with win98 forever, its stable blah blah ...All i can say is u can't stick with whacha got 4ever dudes. There will come a time (actually quite soon lol ) when it ll be obsolete and this the world of computing ...Sad but true . So whats wrong with vista guys? between us ..it roxx... bigtime ... surely any sane man who has a system loaded with plugs and various settings under xp will keep it this way until vista is fully hard and soft-wise supported but having used vista ultimate on the side since day1 i just look forward to AP 7 as it will just close the deal for me .Motu has drivers for vista from almost February and this made my 24i/o worth every penny once more. Of course i was shocked to see a company like Motu which is known as geared towards Mac mostly ,to develop vista drivers for their products so soon. M-audio still fail to deliver. My props to MOTU as they have shown why they are the industry leaders once more.
What i want to pinpoint here is -and u can see it all over the world - there's parts of the industry that respond fast and others that don't. Just like the users hehe. Just pick yer poison m8s :-)
PS: hats off to ms, as vista is compatible with 80-90% of the soft and hardware around just out of the box.As i also was an XP user from day1 as well, i remember it took 'em almost a year and a half to reach the same level of compatibility lol ...
PS2: My guess is AP7 will be here b4 2008 ,and since SF9 (and Vegas8) is already Vista compatible u have no excuse for not upgrading your machines.Of course if u can afford it that is...
