DVD Media Issues

I was using NERO OEM for awhile but ran into problems with using various DVD media such as DVD+R/W and then switching to DVD-R. I decided to uninstall and get DVD Architect 4.0 as I've been using Vegas 6.0. I thought this might help solve the issue, but I am still experiencing problems as I can't burn DVD-R media, only DVD+R/W. When I first started burning, I used DVD-R exclusively with mixed results and started using the R/W to "test burn" my projects. I was able to burn some -R DVD's but now I can't.

I've tried different brands to no avail. Any suggestions? Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Probably your burner, what media have you tried.
Also I've had issues with suspect data cables to the burner.

Authored over 1,000 DVDs, haven't had a problem in years apart from a burner needing to be replaced to cope with 8x media.

Thanks for your post. I'm using a SONY DRU-720a drive. Was using the NERO OEM that came with it and it was working pretty well at first. Now I've loaded Sony Architect Studio 4.0 and still have same results.

I've probably (sucessfully) burned maybe 100 DVD's & CD's total. I bought this drive online for a PC build and I waited months before I installed the drive. Now the replacement / warranty has expired and I'm bummed. I did a SONY drive diagnostic and according to the diagnostic, it was writing but failed on reading. Sent results to Sony Support and am waiting til Monday to call them.

My hunch is that I've a faultry burner. Not a great loss but a hassle and was wondering if there's something I can do to fix it (instead of replace).

Thanks,

P.S. Used Sony DVD-R, & +RW, Memorex, TDK DVD-R as well as Taio Yunden DVD-R, Prodisc DVD-R. Only the Sony DVD+RW seems to work.

Dust may be the culprit. I had the same with my 8 months old standalone dvd/hd recorder. I opened it, cleaned the dvd lens with a cotton stick, now it accepts all media, even 16X discs!
The malfunction started gradually: first it wouldn't accept 16X, later only dvd-RW (4X) would be accepted (while commercial dvds would be run always). I also thought it was something I did wrong in DVDA, but after many hours of eliminating, I concluded that the player was the culprit.

Nero DVD Speed works OK to test drives, & AFAIK there's nothing wrong with the CD/DVD cleaning discs like those made by Fellowes -- worth a couple bucks IMHO, & much safer than dismantling hardware. ;-)

I've been using Plextor drives for years, and they are getting cheaper all the time. Have all worked flawlessly for me . .
