The length sets the natural length of the text generator. It won't change the length on the timeline, but it will put a little notch in the event wherever its natural end is reached.

Just like a video event, you can stretch a text event out longer (or shorter) than the original item's length. Depending on the right-click "Switch > Loop" setting for that event, it will either repeat back at the beginning, or if "Loop" is unchecked it will just hold its value at the end of the event.

For example, you could have a text event that was 5 seconds long, but you could stretch it out to 7 seconds on the timeline. You'll see a little notch at the 5-second mark in your event.

If this is just static text, maybe with fade-in or fade-out applied on the timeline, you can ignore the text event length and just stretch it as you wish on the timeline.

However, if you have the text event keyframed, so that the font size changes from start to end, or color or shadow or glow or position, etc, then it is important to use the text length to get what you want. Otherwise, at the end of your 5 second text item, it would go back and start at the beginning again for the remaining 2 seconds. (Or if "Loop" is unchecked, would just freeze for the last 2 seconds).

Regarding cursor sync -- I don't know. I'm at a computer that doesn't have VMS or Vegas installed, can't check it out. Sorry.

"Also, how do I sync the cursor to the timeline? The button is there, the keyframes are there, but no sync. Am I out of sync???"

Ya know, I've wondered that exact same thing multiple times. Thanks for taking the time to post the question. I just scratch my head with this one - the media window seems to be the only one that shows the sync to timeline button, but does not sync to timeline.

There's been a lot of discussion about the sync cursor issue in the full Vegas forum. Apparently there is no sync function for generated media. Why does the button still show up there? I dunno. *shrug*

Thanks alot you guys for all the help. I'm glad it's not just me being blonde :O It sure would be nicer if you could sync the cursor though :( There has been a lot of talk of using 'BluffTitler' to do text. Is it a plug-in, or do you have to do your work and import it? I have worked with 'Heroglyph' a bit (it's a plug in.....pretty much), but a big learning curve (at least for me :) ). Thanks again for all the continued support. Take care. Cin

BluffTitler's a standalone app. You do the work and then import the video you output from it. It's a two way street though - you can include video from VMS in BluffTitler. At first glance the UI seems a bit odd, but it quickly makes sense once you start playing with it.

Thanks Ian. I think I will see if there is a trial version, and download it. I have read a lot of good things about it, and look forward to giving it a try. Take care. Cin

You might find my video tutorial about BluffTitler Basics helpful in getting up to speed with BT more quickly.

See the link on my site here:

Or look for the "streaming video tutorial" link at the BluffTitler site (and in the BluffTitler help file):
