not responding

Background:
In the past I have used VMS successfully to create one project (relatively simple DVD of Christmas video and a short slideshow set to music). My new project (the one that is causing me trouble) is a slideshow set to music for my Dad’s 60th. There is no video, just a bunch of still images set to music. I scanned most of the photos into my computer because they were old pics (before digital).

My computer stats:
Dell Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630 with HT Technology (3.0Ghz)
1GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz

Problem: VMS6.0 not responding - the program “hangs” almost immediately after opening the slideshow project. I have approx. 100 photos loaded into this project and three songs. I can only edit for a minute or two before VMS starts hanging (not responding) and I have to end it through task manager and restart the program.

I read another post on the optimal scanning size, I think all the pictures I scanned may be just too large file size…most are very large files (5000KB for one picture) I had read somewhere (not on this forum) to set the scanner to highest resolution to scan old photos, so I had my scanner set to 600dpi.

If jpeg file size is the problem, does anybody have any guidelines for working with jpeg images and music in slideshows? i.e. how many photos maximum or file size max, etc. I plan on creating this type of project often and any knowledge on slideshows would be greatly appreciated!!

I usually scan at 300DPI - I find this a good tradeoff between file size and ability to zoom into an image.

Maybe the first thing you could try is removing half of the pictures and see if vegas works. If it does work then you may need to render the first half to a new track as an avi the delete or move the first half or maybe mute timeline then bring in your other half. I f it's a size or memory issue this may help. It could also be just one corrupt or incompatible photo.
Hope you solve your problem.

I will try that, thanks!

Vegas has a problem with very large jpeg files. I would recommend you definitely scan your pictures at the highest resolution possible, you might want to use them for other things later on. For video work however, you really don't need a very high resolution. I use mostly somewhere around 1000 by XXXX pixels or thereabouts for DV/DVD and a little bigger for HDV.

You can go look at Google for batch converting utilities, of, if you have Photoshop (I would strongly recommend that - Elements is quite fine) you can use that too.

Batch convert all your images to slightly smaller dimensions, and change them to PNGs. I have much better experience with PNGs than I do with JPEGs. This is with the full version of Vegas.

Had a similar problem with a show that runs 12.5 minutes. Lots of large jpegs. After resizing all of them to a resolution of about 800x600 everything works fine.

I resized all my photos using MS Office Picture Manager. This solved the problem and I was able to complete the slideshow no problem. The resulting DVD came out crystal clear, even on our 60" TV!
Thanks for the input!
