Just received my SoundForge 9...Do I need to keep Sound Forge 8 installed on my system, or can I safely remove it and not lose anything?

You can do whichever you wish. Lots of us keep the old versions installed for a while, "just in case". But you don't have to.

I had SF8 besides my new SF9. Only problem after uninstalling it seems that 2-3 directX-plugins are no longer there - or, more correct, the names are there, but I can't load them anymore. Must find out how to reregister my directX-plugins with the files in the sony setup folder, I think...:-)

You can usually register plugins pretty easily by having Sound Forge open, then finding the plugin file in explorer and dragging it onto Sound Forge's workspace.
