PSCS3 Training

Anybody know if this company puts out quality training videos on photoshop? Would you recommend another?

I have finally told myself that I will start using Photoshop and I intend to learn it. The last time I used it was at University on a MAC and I hated it then mainly because I could do the work much more intuitively on a PC using Micrografx Picture Publisher which no longer exists.

Total Training puts out very high quality training videos.

Lynda.com also has training videos and a subscription based online training library, $25 a month or $250 per year provides you access to ALL the training titles in their library. Definitely worth checking out.

This is with new trainer. I had their Photoshop 7 (I believe) series with Deke McClelland and it was superb. Premiere series with Rosenberg is so-so in my opinion. And After Effects series (huge stack of DVDs, took entire shelf) is outstanding. I would not plop money again for these as I got basics and a lot of useful tips and can learn further by myself. But it was very quick and efficient way to get into it. I wish video training would come with a transcript book as, once you get through video, you want to go back to specific things that could be searched in the transcript.

No Vegas training from them though :) I know, I know we have VASST for that.

VASST also offers CS3 training, released at NAB 2007.
The three volumes not only cover the Photoshop Ex/CS3 app, but do so with an angle towards video editors.
Rich Harrington, Photoshop DreamTeam member, is the instructor.

Spot,

I looked at the training on your site, but thought it was just geared towards video. I was needing to learn pretty much all angles of photoshop. It took me around 45 minutes to figure out how to resize an image on a layer and move a mask with the image that it was attached to on the same layer. I can do this in less than 10 seconds in fireworks or Micrografx Picture Publisher 10 pro.

When choosing self-paced visual training, there are three choices:

1. Online (lynda.com). Lowest cost by far, low resolution, so the trainer has to zoom in and out, back and forth between the various parts of the user interface and the whole picture of the workspace

2. Video DVD (many choices). This is standard definition NTSC/PAL recorded video with closeups of the screen. The better ones achieve higher clarity by using screen capture software to capture the whole screen and the various user interface elements, without using a camera to shoot the screen. Visually, you will still be looking at a lot of back and forth between the full workspace and needed details of the user interface, and many find it difficult to remember where those UI elements are located.

3. Flash data DVD that can only be played on a computer (Total Training pioneered this). This offers typically 1024x768 video with enough detail to see both the complete workspace and all necessary user interface elements. Conveniently, thanks to better codecs, each DVD can hold up to six hours of high definition video.

TechSmith codec is typical for flash. But it's not only codec that allows to sqeeze that much hi-res flash on DVD, screen capture and talking head frames have a lot of static background, which is taken advantage of by the codec.
