Needless to say, those of us that write in MIDI are overjoyed at the enhanced MIDI capability in AP6. I thought I would submit my suggestions for MIDI features that would bring AP closer to MIDI nirvana: Add a menu structure in the CLIP PROPERTIES/PIANO ROLL that has choices for 1. a SELECT ALL feature would automatically select all notes in the piano roll without having to use the select tool 2. TRANSPOSE selected notes up/down a semitone or up/down an octave is a feature I use a LOT...especially when doing chord progressions using one MIDI sequence repeatedly 3. a chord creator where you draw a single note and the piano roll automatically creates the chord you pre-selected 4. a strum tool - great for guitars. similar to the chord tool but when the piano roll draws the chord, it creats an offset on the MIDI notes so when played they will sound like a strum, with a slight delay between notes. 5. maybe an arpeggiator tool for those doing techno or other genres that like arpeggiated patterns. These features are the ONLY reason I use another application as Rewire or VST plugin - to get the MIDI capability. Otherwise (except for its occasional instability), AP6 is a do-it-all DAW for me. Get it stable and make the MIDI more robust and there is no reason to use anything else! Message last edited on4/25/2007 9:24:13 AM byohmaya. |

Most of the MIDI I've been hearing sounds like tinny low quality computer generated music. Could someone point to some MIDI based music that doesn't? I thought SoftSynths were a better option now. |

Yes, soft synths are wonderful, but they're still midi controlled. Ohmaya - some nice suggestions .... |

MIDI is only as good as the person who played or programed the part. Good midi programing sounds good. |

http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?songs=129134&T=573 Visit my site on Acid Planet at the link above and play the three songs I have posted as they were all done using Acid 6 Pro and MIDI. I hope they will show you what MIDI can do in combo with a good synth. I compose all of my pieces in MIDI first and then route the MIDI to either an external synth and record it back in as audio, or route it to a soft synth. I think you will agree that when done well, MIDI can be very realistic. It helps of course to have some good MIDI editing tools like legato, quantize, etc. And most importantly, it pays to invest in some good soft synths or a good quality rack synth. JW - I think you are confusing MIDI - which is just the programming - with the output - which is the synth sounds produced when the MIDI is routed to the synth. The MIDI itself does not have any sound qualities as it is just commands (not on, note off, etc). If you just compose MIDI notes and use the MIDI synth in your soundcard to play it back, it will sound tinny and robotic because it's jst a generic sound card synth. You need to route the MIDI you compose to either a soft synth or a hardware synth to produce the higher quality sounds. But dont sell MIDI short until you heard it done well. Hopefully, you will think my music is and example of MIDI done well! :) Message last edited on5/6/2007 7:14:59 AM byohmaya. |

I have a Roland XV-3080 rack mount synth which I used for all of the parts in Opus 3. On Opus 1 and 2, I used EWQL Orchestra Gold VSTi And Spectrasonics Stylus VSTi for the percussion. Again - you do all of the parts in MIDI first, edit the MIDI, route the parts to the softsynths or external outputs and then render each MIDI track individually to separate audio tracks ready to be mixed like any other project. You could do the same with the Kompakt Player that comes with Acid 6. For example, you record the melody line in channel 1 of a MIDI track and route that track to Kompakt insert 1. Load strings to rack space one and set it to receive on channel 1. Then do a bass line on another MIDI track sending on channel 2, then load a bass patch into slot 2 of Kompakt and set it receive on MIDI channel 2. and so on...Then you can play all of the MIDI tracks simultaneously and they will play to the instruments they are routed to. Make sure in Kompakt to set each instrument to a different output pair if you want to mix them independently. Then go to the Acid mixer and rt click on Komapkt ouputs 1/2 and add additional outputs for as many instruments as you have. You can then mix the outputs like any other bus. If you need more help, just email me and I'll be happy to help. It took me a long time to learn this, but once I got it down, it's the only way for me to work! Hopefully the results speak for themselves! Message last edited on5/6/2007 3:57:01 PM byohmaya. |

Sent you the .acd file of a simple 8 bar recording using the Acid Kompakt player as the VST. Hope it helps! |

Thanks! I just started being able to recreate with the PC what I have heard for years in my head and it's really exciting. Being a violinist can be very lonely if you have no one to play with. Now I have lots of musical "friends" in virtual music land. :) Flo |
