Subject:SF 9 Crashes on startup

I just installed and registered SF9.

It goes through its routine of initializing plugins, but after saying Querying Additional Interfaces, there's something about VST plugins, then SF disappears completely.

Acid 6 loads fine.

Please help!

I'm not certain it really is VSTs, but you can search for "vst_grovel.log", which will at least provide some more insight. It should be somewhere like C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Sony\Sound Forge\9.0. If you use Windows Search, you'll have to search hidden files and folders.

If it is a VST issue, "disappears completely" leads me to believe it is some type of PACE or dongle issue, but it still shouldn't bring down the app. Do you happen to be running Windows Vista?

I checked and the grovel log is not there. There's nothing in that folder. Are there any other places it logs errors?

As far as Pace - it's true I didn't have my iLok plugged in (I use that with another computer most of the time) but on the other hand, Acid 6 loads fine.

Not running vista - shudder!

Jack,

Please, fill out your system specs in your profile - or at least tell me what audio hardware you are using.

Thanks
Peter

Peter's probably on the right track by asking you for more info on your hardware, but let's just make certain it isn't a VST issue.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files\Sony\Sound Forge 9.0. Find sfvstwrap.dll and move it to the desktop or some other convenient location. Restart Forge.

If you still crash, move the "Audio Hardware Drivers" from the same folder to another location. Restart Forge.

Once you are done, go ahead and put the moved items back where they were and let us know what you find.

Thanks,
J.

Peter and J.:
This pc has the frontier design Dakota card. ( I had put that into my profile). I also have a laptop with a FireBox and Echo Indigo but I haven't tried installing there.

I tried removing the dll and the directory as you instructed and nothing better happened. Exactly the same phenomenon.

Is there any debug mode or logging mode I can turn on to see exactly what's crashing it?

Thanks,
Jack

Something sounds very strange here. Let's start from scratch.

Go ahead and remove sfvstwrap.dll and the drivers folder again, then hold down Ctrl+Shift when you restart Forge. A small dialog will come up asking you if you want to reset prefs. Go ahead and check the "Delete all cached application data" checkbox and click OK.

Assuming that works, shut down and restore the drivers folder, restart, if that works, restore sfvstwrap.dll, restart.

That did it!!

Any idea why?

I'm happy to say that it comes up really fast now too.

Thanks so much for your help.

Glad that worked.

I expect that the audio device and routing prefs were not saved properly. If you can recall the initial changes you made to Options->Prefs->Audio prior to the problem (or if you reproduce the problem), that would be a helpful starting point.

Thanks,
J.

Bad news.

I started it up today, and it's happening the same. I never got to even use it; just saw it work that one day and have been using Vegas since then.

I had not set any preferences. The first time, I had never even gotten it to work!

I can redo the steps you gave me, but this is weird!

Are you using the latest Dakota driver? They just released a new one very recently and it appears to have resolved some issues I was having that were VERY similar to yours.

I am having the same issue when it starts up. I just did a clean new install of XP and put in a new HD. My old machine had Sound Forge 7 & 9 and they both worked fine. On this new setup I only have 9 on it and I can't get it to start up at all. I tried all the solutions on this thread and still no luck. I can't think of anything else. I have Ableton Live and ProTools on this computer but I also had them on the other setup and everything worked.

Thanks
