Film Effects within

I was just wondering how one is to keep the film effects within the widescreen aspect ratio? When I use the scratch effect from the film effect within the video fx the scratches and dust effects go outside of my widescreen aspect ratio (basically going into the black bars on top and bottom). How do I prevent this? Thanks.

One way, would be to set up a mask, that is the size of your letterbox. Mask out the black bars with new black bars, basically.

I'm guessing you must have some reason for having a 4:3 project to contain widescreen material? If your material is all widescreen then having the project be widescreen would avoid the problem completely.
