OT: Sound Forge 9.0 - Reviews?

Chanimal wrote on 4/9/2007, 5:00 PM
This announcement has only been out for less than 2 hours. Has anyone checked out the new SoundForge 9.0 yet?

I see some new features. Does anyone see why we might need these features if we already have 8.0? (already have noise reduction 2.0).

well the biggeest improvement is multichannel mixing... BUT im hoping the ac3 encoder is either DDTrueHD or at the very least DD Plus.. from the look of it, i doubt it... but i'd be happy to pay extra for this feature..

I also hope that i can import multipl files at varying khz ranges (ie 44.1 and 48khz) without having to resample to 48khz (my coundcard is native 48khz so when i import a 44.1, i have to resample, which i dont like doing.. )

For $99 I get SF9 and Noise Reduction plugin.

Sounds like a steal to me.

If you had noise reduction already, I would have to look into SF9 features more thoroughly:)

Don't forget you get CD Architect with it. Worth the price of the upgrade for that alone in my opinion.

It's faster, LOTS faster.
With NR plug...sweet deal
iZotope plugs, even better still.
XDCAM multichannel...Very fun, but where this is sweet is the drag/drop from either those, or other multichannel files.
the new snapping is identical to Vegas, but of course, visually more precise. I wish I knew why, maybe it's really not more precise, but because I'm so used to the larger draw of SF, I can *feel* more precise even though I'm really not.

You'll love the new meters, although it took me by surprise when I first opened it. My fave, I think...is the mix for FX between wet/dry and the multichannel spectrum analyzer. I've always been one for mixing EQ holes in my music/beds and cutting for dialog/vox, and the SA makes it easier to see.
Multi-channel isn't a big deal for me, Vegas is great for that, but many people will enjoy it. I'm glad for it for the XDCAM world.
Haven't tried to load BWF's yet, but should load those from the Edirol w/no issue.

How do you get the $99 deal? All I see is a $149 one on the Sony website. I have SF 8 and I already have the NR 2 plugin and CD Architect (which I love by the way).

Faster is definitely right! I haven't actually timed this yet, but my gut reaction is that MP3 encoding is about 3 times faster than in version 8. At first i thought something was wrong, but the files it produced were all perfect.

Relax, Laurence.
There has always been a special upgrade price for the first month or so, but the email usually takes a few days to get out to everybody.

Correct, Laurence, $50 off via email. Make sure your spam blocker doesn't delete it first. I tend to get about half of my Sony emails, but I received this one yesterday.

Has anyone received the email yet?

Nothing here yet.

I was disappointed that you can't import AC-3 files, only export - even though multichannel editing is the main new feature. I am planning on getting CS3 Master so will see how Soundbooth works out. Currently use Nero 7's wave tool. To put it in perspective, nothing has yet enticed me to get proffesional audio software - most my videos are just photo montages with music sound tracks.

I got mine about 22.3 hours ago.

As usual, the Knowledgebase contains all the latest upgrade deals for those who don't get the email.

Line item #2: "Is there any special pricing on the new version of Sound Forge?"

Good call; very well done! I had no trouble following a few links to get the $99 offer online through Sony's shopping cart.

Does the Izotope mastering plug-in include the Multiband Harmonic Exciter function of the Ozone 3 bundle?

Upgrade from 7 to 9 looks like a no brainer for me regardless.

This is one of the best deal I've seen for a long time! I didn't upgrade to 8 because there wasn't much improvement I needed that I saw. But with NR2 & Izotope and more speed.. definitely! :)

I got the email yesterday, but had to call (and wait forever for the sales dept) when the cart price was $149. Navigating to the cart with their nav gets me the $149 price; following the link posted here, I get the $99 price.

Calling, I was able to get the $99 upgrade. :D

Biggest cool new thing: multi-channel. I bought it specifically for the AC-3 export, even though my Acid 6 does it...maybe a little better with the fader, but SF is easier to use.

>>>Haven't tried to load BWF's yet, but should load those from the Edirol w/no issue<<<

It will load BWF mono and BWF Poly files but there is no support for SMPTE TC stamps so if you make any changes to the length of the file and save them, the metadata TC stamp will be incorrect.

So, no editing of BWF/TC files you will be delivering to a post house for picture sync and no viewing of the TC on these files from SF9's timeline.
jbolley wrote on 4/11/2007, 7:54 AM
seriously? ouch.
tomaras wrote on 4/11/2007, 5:46 PM
well..it's not much different in Vegas either. Vegas is a bit better because at least you can import BWF with TC onto a SMPTE timeline, but you still can't save it as BWF so there's no way a location sound person can use it to edit a file and then deliver it to a post or film transfer house in the INDUSTRY STANDARD BWF format.
