How do you mix recording sources in Windows Vista? WinXP is equipped with a little Play/Record mixer. This mixer has views that display the recording or play sources and allow you to control the level, balance and even mute the source. WinVista seems to be lacking this basic mixer, instead substituting a rather limited source selector which, depending on the maturity of the new device drivers, may function only partially. Microsoft seems to be depending on sound card manfacturers or others to supply this functionality. I'm guessing that most pro users of Sound Forge are still using external mixers to adjust source levels. But how about the talented home users that put together their own creations by combining various audio sources. How do you do this in Vista? |

That source mixer is supplied with your audio device driver. In the rush to get ouot a compliant driver, has your soundcard manufacturer rushed out a 'limited' edition , or relied on a generic Vista one ? Also, I've never heard of the soundcard mixer applet being used to actually 'mix' audio - isn't that what we have audio applications for !? geoff Message last edited on4/9/2007 8:21:59 PM byGeoff_Wood. |

Seems that way to me too. I've never seen a sound device applet that lets you mix multiple inputs. They all select one input exclusively. |

In Vista, there is really no applet. And Creative normally supplies little applications with their soundcards, but have not released any that work under Vista. In WinXP, there is a useful little applet. Open the Volume Control applet (right click on the icon in your taskbar), select Options/Properties/Recording. All the inputs from your soundcard and the media devices on your computer should be displayed and are selectable. The applet sports a neat little mixer. If you haven't used it, try it sometime. ..Gerry |

Gerry C, i know exactly what you are talking about, and that only lets you select one input at a time. You can't mix multiple sources that way. On the other hand, i suppose you could use the Playback mixer to mix a couple of things together, then record from the "PC Speaker" or "What U Hear" input. That would be passing everything through the low-grade sound card twice so it wouldn't be ideal. Much better yet to just record each thing separately, one at a time, then combine them all in Vegas, Acid, or Sound Forge 9. |

Yes, that's true. I've used a distributed approach, with Creative's utilities plus the WinXP applet. Since the Creative mixer is no longer functional under Vista, we circle back to my original question. What are Sound Forge users using to mix sources? Hardware or external mixers? Are there any good software mixers that work with mainstream sound cards? ..Gerry |

Soundforge users typically DON'T mix sources. That's not what an editor is for, although you can laboriously do something along those line with the files once acquired. Horses-for-courses - what you really should be using is Vegas or Acid ! geoff |
