?

I'm assuming you're having problems with Media Manager. Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling?

Why cant media manager be a separate application which runs indepent of ACID, but can be run in ACID, VEGAS and Sound Forge upon demand?

No
The problem comes from update of woindows xp.
It is necessary to no load framework3...
It is necessaryl just load Windows xp2 and to let the installation of acid decide on programs which they miss.
it will download them.

As far as I'm concerened media manager should be removed from Acid. I've had Acid Pro 6 since it came out. Never was able to get the dumb thing to work. That was on XP. Tryed it on a Vista system, besides not working it caused lots of other problems.

Or, there should at least be an option to remove it or not install it at all. I've tried everything, and can't get the damn thing to work...

The MM is a good example of one of Sony’s ideological crusades.

It’s a sacred cow, doesn’t matter how bloated and cumbersome it is and it doesn’t matter how many users dislike it.

They are going to force every user to install it and that is it.

Search back through this forum and you’ll see they actually get pretty testy that so many users ask for it to be removed.

...Sony get a lot of things right in there software design. They just sometimes get bogged down in some pretty serious cart before the horse issues...

Firstly, I never use Media Manager, either in Acid or Vegas, BUT ...

For Acid users particularly, I can see every reason to have it and keep improving it.

On those occasions when I use loops, one of the hardest things is to quickly find what I want from the myriad of different loops and folders I have accumulated.

This is only an occasional thing for me - I use mainly the midi and audio functions, but if I was a loopy person more often it would be very useful to go through and attach several different tags to every loop, rather than as it is now - having to know which single folder it's in.

I can imagine that with tags such as "end fill"(for drum loops), 3/4 time, country feel, acoustic guitar, straight rock, funk, classical build up, sad feel etc., etc., it would make this task much easier.

The fact that many have trouble with MM slowing down their system may be solvable by hardware improvements, or by upgrades from Sony, but at least in principle the idea of a customisable built-in database seems an enhancement rather than a problem.

I totally agree, AND, it should be an option for the user to install it or not. I don't use MM and I don't have any program, audio or otherwise on any of my 4 systems, that takes as long to load as Acid. Sometimes I'm not sure if I even fully clicked on the decktop shortcut because nothing happens for awhile after I do try to open, then eventually it starts loading. There's been several times that I've opened 2 or 3 instances because of this. If I didn't know better, I'd assume that this is bug. I'd hate to think of how much additional time would be added if I had my loops assigned to MM in any way. Vegas also has MM (which I don't use either) and it doesn't take near the same amount of time to load. Perhaps this is because Acid now has enhanced midi, groove pool, etc., that slows down the process? Anyway, Acid has begun to feel bloated and heavy to me.

I honestly don't understand why so many don't like the MM.Sure if it's buggy for you that is a good point but if not???

I don't use it THAT in depth. I always have it open on my second monitor ready to go and never have a problem with it. I LOVE it for that spontaneous idea of "I need a shaker here" or "some weird distorted sound effect"...I punch it in and it seeks in my stash of loops/samples/etc and shows me what I've got.

I personally feel it enhances the creative process by finding what you hear in your head so quick as to keep the creative flow going. Just drag it into the timeline and done.

Plus why not just disable it after the install???You should only be installing a update/upgrade once so why the big fuss?

I hope that they continue to develop it since I've gotten so used to using it. I'm not sure how necessary it will be since Vista is supposed to have a really good built in search engine...or am I wrong in saying that???

Anyway sure if they made it a separate install AND download those who just wanted to grab the update without the MM could do so and people can be happy.

Ed, I didn't say I didn't "like" MM – I said I didn't use it and I don't like the additional launch time because of it. I do have it disabled, but apparently the thing still has to load, hence the slow launch. I can also easily see how MM can be a real advantage to some users but I'm not one of them, nor do I anticipate that I'd ever work that way.

Hey sorry but I was just being generalizing and not picking you out bro. I've seen this dislike for the MM for a while and just thought it was weird. Have you tried uninstalling the MM stuff in the control panel add/remove programs? Does it cause an error? Wow the start times is still long? Wild. Man I can hardly wait till I upgrade my pc to a multicore unit. If it is in the budget a dual quadcore would be a dream come true. I wonder how much longer till octacores get released?

Well yeah, a zillion core system would be nice, but I'm not particularly motivated to spend money upgrading a system that works great for 99% of what I do just so I can not notice how some bloated software slows things down. Anyway, as you are aware, lean, fast and effecient is one of the primary factors that is moving a lot of folks over to reaper-ville.

I don't really see the usefulness of Media Manager, unless you only have a tiny number of loops. The irony to me is, the more loops you have, the less useful Media Manager is.

Say that I buy a new loop CD that is not from Sony. It has 850 loops on it. Either I spend a day and a half manually categorizing each and every one, or they are left out of my searches when I use Media Manager. And sometimes they are beyond categorizing. If a particular loop might be techno, or industrial, or ambient, or maybe even hip hop, how the heck do I label it in MM? Sure, I could give it every one of those labels, but what's the point?

The point is, if you build up a dependence on MM, then you may be omitting a lot of loops in your collection or limiting yourself when certain sounds that might be right, will not turn up in your searches. It's too mechanical for me. Generally the folder names within each new loop set are good enough for my purposes.

Add to that the way MM slows down Acid loading, and I find it to be pretty useless. That's just my opinion. But I'd feel better if Media Manager was merely an optional install rather than a mandatory install.

Some interesting views, feign, but surely the more loops you have the MORE useful MM is.

The effectivenerss of MM does, as you infer, depend on how good YOU are at adding tags and making it appear in as many different categories as possible.

If you only have a few loops, then I agree the default folder system will probably be ok, but it still depends very much on your memory as to what you've got and where anything is.

Yes, it would take time to go through each loop and add all the tags that your imagination can come up with, but the point is that once you've done this, you can have as many cross references to a single loop as you like, compared with finding it in the ONE actual folder where it is saved.
- and by doing this you aren't limiting yourself - you can still use the Explorer/Windows folders method of finding something any time you want.

The slowing down effect of MM is a separate issue, and is nothing to do with the potential advantage of being able to find things as quickly as you can.

As I said earlier - I don't use Media Manager, but I can see its potential ....
