Subject:I want to use AP6 but...

I've been a Vegas user for years now and like SF/ Sony's products.
I'm doing a multitrack recording for my church in my studio and would love to use AcidPro6 but...
It sounds very unstable from what I've been reading in here!
I'm really on the fence here, seriously considering Cakewalk HomeStudio 6, but hate to have to learn new software!
What do you guys think?

Are you recording and editing live audio? Or are you producing music from midi and loops?

If the former, which i suspect from your post, why would you even consider ACID? Vegas will handle all that just fine, probably simpler than ACID would.

If it is the latter, then most of the stability complaints disappeared with the last couple of releases of ACID. It's quite rock solid for most users. Keep in mind that what you see here in the forums isn't an accurate sampling of problems. Those who have complaints will sooner and more often post in here than those who have no problems.

I think it's the most stable release since my beloved 3g

At this point, I don't find Acid6 unstable at all. Not sure where you got that info from, but ...
it's rock solid here. I use it every day.

I agree - Acid 6 Pro is a great program, combining lots of elements. I've just completed a composition with
4 audio tracks (Acoustic Guitar + 3 vocals)
6 Acid Loops - my "drummer" - a combination of Beatblox & Vitale loops
4 midi tracks - piano, cello, strings & glockenspiel - Kompakt & DLS Soft Synths.

The ability to use all these together so easily is a delight - with a few added features, this program will beat anything, IMHO, for functionality AND stability.

I do have V6 and have been using it just for recording vocals with sound tracks. I will need to use midi and loops for the rest of the project. I have been back and forth for months now deciding what to use.But you're right, lately from what I've read AP6 seems to have gotten better.
Are there any limitations that AP6 has compared to Sonar?
Keeping in mind that this is a real basic recording for my church and most of the content will be vocals on sound tracks it would be a big time saver not to have to learn Sonar!
What kind of projects are you guys doing with AP6 & Vegas?

Acid is an amazing (the best?) program if you're doing anything loop& sample based, esp. since the beat detection functions work better than anything else. It's also excellent for arranging, composing, and acting as a vst hub - you get to realize your musical ideas into actual sounds with ease...and its kinda fun, which is due, in no small part, to the un-fussy UI. It looks plain - but's totally functional, and feels like a real "tool". It's, in my experience, a fairly robust piece of software. People have some problems about the midi capabilities - ie., a little basic - but for my needs (house/dance tracks), the simplicity is actually a plus. Also - if you have Acid, you should think about getting Sound Forge...the two work seamlessly with each other, and really improve the overall experience.

For recording tho....and setting up a real/virtual 'studio' ...you might wanna think about cakewalk...seems to offer the most control.

Adding to what vespesian said, ACID has come a long way since its early days as a digital audio-only workstation tool. Apparently, a lot of people aren't aware that ACID Pro didn't even have the capability to playback and record MIDI tracks until version 3—and even then you had to use an external MIDI editor to make changes.

And ACID Pro 6 is the premiere version to include multitracking a la Vegas.

About the only thing that disappoints me about ACID is that it doesn't have a traditional staff notation view for MIDI. I'm not big on piano rolls (even though I'll take it if I can't get anything else). Still, it's not a big gripe as I'm not as big on MIDI as I am digital audio.

Vegas' strengths lie in the mixing and, of course, the NLE/video editing categories, whereas ACID is very much a creative tool in regards to audio and MIDI. Sound Forge completes the trifecta with its insane amount of digital audio editing tools.

Support forums have a way of being a moan magnet so this forum is no different in that regard. (I'm not saying that peoples gripes aren't legitimate; it's just the way things are.)

If your system is clean and running efficiently without any crap and billions of icons running in the SysTray, ACID should run fine on your system.

Interesting, Iacobus - I previously used Logic Audio with its staff notation, and I thought I'd miss that when changing to Acid, but now I've got used to piano roll I much prefer it - I find the visual display of exact start time and duration of each note extremely helpful, plus the ability to drag the note or its edges..

Mind you - my ability to read staff notation was always a bit restricted - it was like having to slowly translate from another language, whereas piano roll is more directly representative.

I still find it a bit unstable, but definitely usable.
