Here's my latest issue when digitizing vinyl, using Acid Music Studio 6.0

(Please don't tell me how Soundforge would be better. This was debated at some length a few months ago here. I admit I may not be using the best option, but it just happens to be what I have.)

Basically, I recorded one portion of one side of an album a few times, until I was happy with the sound quality. When the recording seemed noise and distortion free to me (and there was zero clipping), I then recorded the whole album.

But when recording and replaying the entire album, the very same track exhibited some noise that wasn't there when I made the initial recording. And absolutely no settings were changed.

I would not bother mentioning this, except I am pretty sure that this happened a few other times. And it makes me wonder whether Music Studio reacts differently when making a longer recording.

I'll be very specific about the noise I'm talking about. I recorded some Dizzy Gillepsie and Charlie Parker. During my initial test-recording, Dizzy's trumpet sounded crystal clear. But during the longer recording, his trumpet (on the same section of the record) was accompanied by a little "fuzziness" or "distortion." It's subtle, but enough to bother me.

So can anyone explain why I am hearing this particular kind of noise during the longer recording, but not the earlier shorter recording of the same material, even though the recording conditions were exactlly the same? And keep in mind, I am pretty sure this has happened to me before.

My first guess would be groove mapping. Check your preferences and turn it off for the import of long files.
Any better with a fresh capture?

I don't even know what groove mapping is. Under preferences, I see a box checked for "automatically start the beatmapper wizard for long files." Is that what you mean?

I think I just figured out the problem, and it's something that never occurred to me.

I use the add-on program Bias Soundsoap II for noise reduction. It's nice and simple, perfect for my lack of sophistication.

But what I just discovered is that if I remove SoundSoap from the audio plug-in edit "chain" entirely, then the offending sound disappears. Strangely, the sound remains if I leave SounSoap in the chain, yet turn off its effects.

This makes no sense to me, but I am positive that it's occurring.

Noise Reduction can leave artifacts.

"Noise reduction can leave artifacts."

You have no idea how much I wish someone had told me that a few months ago. Most of the time, that noise reduction has not done any harm that I've noticed. But I just checked another recording that had the same flaw, and sure enough, it was the noise reduction tool that caused it. And this particular type of noise had been driving me crazy.

I'm tempted now to go without noise reduction altogether.

What about recording without noise reduction and saving two versions, one with and one without? Also, you may need to play with the settings on the noise reduction... and sometimes you can only use a little.
